The interesting message 15-goal talent has already given on his future as Celtic link emerges
Shamrock Rovers talent Danny Mandroiu has already given an indication that his short-term future lies with the League of Ireland club.
A link emerged in the Scottish Sun last night claiming that Celtic were confident of pulling off a deal for the Irish midfielder in the January transfer window. This comes after a superb campaign in which the player has hammered home 15 goals and bagged 5 assists in 37 games [Transfermarkt].
Celtic raided Rovers for Liam Scales in the summer, and it looks as though they could be in line to bag another talent from the Irish club.
However, speaking about his future only days ago, Mandroiu stated that he would be remaining with Rovers for now.
As quoted by the Irish Sun when speaking about a potential Ireland call-up, Mandroiu said: “He doesn’t ring me, you know what I mean? He’s not my mate or anything [Ireland boss Stephen Kenny]! All I need to do is keep doing what I’m doing.
“It’s down to me but also down to the manager to pick me, the way it’s going now I am happy at Rovers, I am going to be staying here at Rovers.
“I want to play for my country as that would mean everything.”
Danny Mandroiu still has eyes on a Shamrock Rovers future despite Celtic interest
So the message is pretty clear from the Irish talent. He still views himself as having work to do with Shamrock Rovers despite the interest in his services. These were comments made only days ago, it’s difficult to see Mandroiu having changed his mind in such a short period of time.
He’s confirming here that he’s staying at Rovers for the time being. That hardly means he’s therefore going to jump ship and move to Scotland in January.
Of course, money talks. Opportunity does too. Even if Rovers and Celtic haven’t yet agreed a fee, there will be a reason the Hoops are confident in landing the player. You have to imagine that they’ve been sent signals that Mandroiu would be delighted to sign up if given the chance.
Rovers have already won the League of Ireland title this season, with their campaign due to be wrapped up after this weekend. So it appears that the player has stated that he’s happy to commit himself to the club for another season.
Interesting considering how much he’s ripped it up in Ireland this year. At 23, you would imagine now is the time for him to step it up. Especially if he wants to bag a future with the national team.
We’ll see what happens come January as always, but it’ll be intriguing to see whether Mandroiu’s commitment to Rovers will be challenged should Celtic agree a fee.
