The loan detail you may have missed in Tuesday Celtic announcement

Celtic confirmed today that young wide player Adam Montgomery has moved on loan to Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone.

Montgomery spent the second half of last season at Aberdeen, making eight appearances in all competitions. A hamstring injury prevented him from more.

Clearly, it’s been determined that he is unlikely to get minutes in Ange Postecoglou’s team initially in the coming campaign, so another loan move to a top-flight side makes perfect sense.

The club didn’t actually announce the terms of the loan, including length, in their official social media post. However, if you look into what Saints had to say about it all, there were a few more details.

Primarily, it should be noted that this isn’t a season-long move, like the one that Liam Scales has just made to Pittodrie.

St Johnstone announced he is only at the club until the January transfer window.

The reason for that hasn’t been determined but it’s worth observing the Perth side have had injury issues and perhaps think they could only need Montgomery for part of the upcoming campaign.

Equally, it could mean Celtic have bigger plans for the 19-year-old and wanted a shorter-term loan to re-evaluate his situation.

If he impresses in the Premiership, having him in the squad as depth for a league run-in might not be the worst idea.

Montgomery’s contract at Celtic doesn’t expire until 2024 so he has room to further develop and make a push into Postecoglou’s long-term plans.

This is another development loan, rather than one simply designed to shift the youngster out.

I’m looking forward to seeing how he progresses at McDiarmid Park, knowing he could be on his way back to the Bhoys early in the new year.
