Celtic’s green and white Hoops are iconic throughout world football.

The most famous picture in the history of Celtic is where legendary captain, Billy McNeill, is holding the European Cup at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon, Portugal on 25 May 1967.

The home shirt is synonymous with the club but there are occasions where the Celtic Park club do need to rely on their second kit for fixtures due to colour clashes with their opponents.

However, in Celtic’s draw with Bayern Munich, fans were treated with the Hoops wearing their third kit in the Allianz Arena, but there was a very good reason for that.

Bayern Munich’s home shirt problems forced a Celtic kit change in the Champions League

Bayern Munich have had to wear their all-white away kit in every Champions League match this season.

That’s because, in their home kit, the colour of their team numbers is too contrasting with their own iconic red home shirt.

With the numbers being black, UEFA has stipulated that the Bundesliga club must wear their away shirt when appearing in their flagship tournament.

That, in turn, meant that Celtic had to wear the third kit to avoid a further colour clash with the home side.

Celtic fans have witnessed huge wins in Europe in the iconic green and white Hoops over the years that will never be forgotten.

Whilst nothing will top the 1967 European Cup win, here are three other memorable victories fans will never forget in the famous Hoops.

Liverpool 0 v 2 Celtic – 2002/03 UEFA Cup

Celtic 1 v 0 Manchester United – 2006/07 Champions League

Celtic had to beat Manchester United at Parkhead to keep their hopes of qualifying from the group stage for the first time in their history alive.

Celtic 2 v 1 Barecelona – UEFA Champions League 2012/13

Celtic have faced Barcelona on 14 occasions over their European history and have lost nine, drawn three and won just twice.

Many will argue that the 2004 1-0 win at Celtic Park is the best win against the Catalan giants but it was a Neil Lennon side that included Efe Ambrose in defence, Charlie Mulgrew playing an advanced midfield role and Miku upfront that beat a Barcelona XI packed with stars like Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Mascherano.

This was Lennon’s second year as a football manager and to pull off a result against one of European football’s powerhouses in the manner that he did, means that the Barcelona win, for us at 67 Hail Hail, is the biggest in Celtic’s most recent history.
