The reason why Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson stepped down from the SPFL board

Michael Nicholson has stepped down from the board of the SPFL and been replaced by Rangers CEO James Bisgrove.

The announcement was made this afternoon as the 42 member clubs of the SPFL elected a new board for the coming season ahead. [SPFL]

What must be made clear is that there is no conspiracy regarding the stepping down of Nicholson and the emergence of Bisgrove onto the board.

The SPFL board changes regularly and the place on the board that is held by one of the Glasgow clubs’ Chief Executives is shared on a rotational basis.

Nicholson took the place of Stewart Robertson in the very same fashion as Robertson had done so when it was time for Peter Lawwell to step down. And if Nicholson is still the Celtic CEO by the next scheduled rotation of the SPFL board, he will resume his role once again.

The new look board at all levels of the Scottish game is as follows:

cinch Premiership: Malcolm McPherson (Hibernian), James Bisgrove (Rangers), James MacDonald (Ross County)

cinch Championship: Paul Hetherington (Airdrieonians), Graeme Mathie (Ayr United)

cinch League 1 and League 2: Alastair Donald (Forfar Athletic), Alternate director – Peter Davidson (Montrose)

With Celtic in Japan at this moment in time and Brendan Rodgers also looking to add more players to the squad in time for the coming season, we can view this development as a positive for the club.

Nicholson can now focus solely on Celtic and continue his already superb work in helping Brendan Rodgers recruit players for the coming season.

With the arrivals of Hyun-jun Yang and Kwon Hyeok-kyu from South Korea due any day now, Celtic have already sealed the deals to bring Odin Thiago Holm, Marco Tilio and Tomoki Iwata to the club.

I don’t think Celtic’s transfer business is anywhere near complete before the transfer window closes this summer. I believe there is still work to be done and I, for one, am glad Nicholson can focus solely on our club as we look to continue our domination of Scottish football.
