Peter Lawwell’s appearance at the Champions League Final on Saturday set the Celtic fan’s tongues wagging over the weekend.

The Celtic Chairman was caught by eagle-eyed fans watching the build-up to the final between Manchester City and Inter Milan when footage from Sky Sports’ showed Lawwell in conversation with Paris St Germain owner, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi. [Daily Record]

Immediately, people started putting 2+2 together and guessing what the answer will be. And who can blame them? With reports claiming that Celtic will hold talks with Enzo Maresca after the final about the vacant manager’s position rife, fans believed that was the reason for Lawwell’s attendance in Istanbul.

But it seems that wasn’t to be. According to the Daily Mail, Lawwell was merely there to attend a meeting of the executive board of the European Club Association before taking in the final. There was no mention of the Celtic chairman meeting up with Maresca. Even if that was on the agenda for Lawwell, the chances of that would likely have been slim as Maresca would have been enjoying the celebrations over the weekend after Manchester City’s 1-0 win.

So until we hear otherwise, we will need to assume that even though Maresca is on Celtic’s candidate list, no meetings have taken place with regards to the Italian taking over at the club.

However, with the swift reports that Celtic have now met with two prospective candidates in Brendan Rodgers and Francesco Farioli, my guess is that it won’t be too long until we find out who will succeed Ange Postecoglou.
