Kyogo Furuhashi has had a wonderful season in Celtic colours, already notching up 33 goals in all competitions. More could be on the way, too, if he performs as we know he can against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday.
A healthy 27 of the striker’s goals came in the Scottish Premiership on the way to a title win. The Japanese international finished as the league’s top scorer ahead of runner-ups Kevin van Veen of Motherwell and Lawrence Shankland of Hearts.
What’s notable about the popular star’s scoring this season is that he saved his best for the biggest games – and no team was punished more by Kyogo than arch-rivals Rangers.
Rangers struggled to contain Celtic star Kyogo
He netted five of his 33 goals this season in the closely-contested derbies, more than he scored against any other side across 2022/23. Two of those even came in the Scottish League Cup final at Hampden.
Remarkably, he hadn’t scored against Rangers prior to the turn of the calendar year, with all five efforts against the Ibrox club during his time in Scotland coming in 2023.
Hearts and Dundee United both felt the wrath of Kyogo, too. He scored four against each side. His only hat-trick of the campaign came in the 9-0 rout of United at Tannadice back in August.
Motherwell, St Johnstone, Livingston and St Mirren are next in the scoring breakdown, each conceding three goals from Kyogo.
The 28-year-old netted twice against Aberdeen, Greenock Morton and Kilmarnock – the most recent of which was his brace against the Dons during Saturday’s Trophy Day.
Rounding off the list of Kyogo’s unfortunate victims are Ross County and Hibernian, both of whom kept him to just one goal across the campaign.
