The two former Celtic Treble winners still looking for a club

The transfer window is a part of the season that all football fans love. The excitement of new players coming in coupled with the possibility of the club raking in millions whenever one of our top players are sold makes what would be a boring part of the year with no football that little bit more bearable.

But what the transfer window also does is give us intrigue about any former players and where they may end up. Especially if the club has a sell-on clause. Like Jeremie Frimpong, for example.

The young Dutch right-back is being touted for a move this summer and it looks like wherever he ends up will earn Celtic a nice tidy sum of money.

And there are two former Celtic players who have gone for big money before that won’t be this summer. Moussa Dembele and Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Both players had very successful periods at Celtic and, incredibly, whilst they are now free agents, the pair of them are still searching for their next club.

In the case of Dembele, this is probably the most surprising one. The big Frenchman was once touted for a big-money move to English Premier League giants, Manchester United but after a couple of weeks of intense speculation, that talk died down.

Moving towards the end of his contract at Lyon, it was rumoured that he was offered to Inter Milan, but even for free, the Italian giants were seemingly not tempted.

I would have thought that Dembele would have found a new club by now. His goalscoring record over the course of his career remains impressive. 51 goals for Celtic over 94 games and 70 goals for Lyon in 172 outings is certainly not be sniffed at. [Transfermarkt]

Surely it is just a matter of time before someone takes a punt on him this summer?

As for Mohamed Elyounoussi, the 28-year-old has never really found the form for Southampton that we witnessed at Celtic over his two-season loan spell at the Hoops.

Overall, the Norwegian international made 64 appearances scoring 24 goals and creating 14 for Celtic. Bizarrely, Moi’s Treble was spread over two seasons as the 2020 Scottish Cup Final was concluded in his second loan spell because of COVID.

Admittedly, his second season was his best in terms of his form and goalscoring but even that wasn’t enough to help the team wrap up the much-coveted ten in a row.

Even with his international experience and clear footballing ability, a club somewhere must be willing to take a punt on Elyounoussi?

Like Dembele, I’m sure it won’t be too long until this former fan favourite kickstarts his career and finds himself a new club.
