Gustaf Lagerbielke has revealed that there was interest from other clubs for his services as he opens up on why he chose to sign for Celtic.
The Swedish defender was taking in his first media press conference today when he was asked if other clubs were looking to grab his signature.
Lagerbielke said [Celtic YouTube], “Yeah there was interest from other clubs but, you know, Celtic with their good Swedish history and like when I said yesterday also when you think of Celtic, you think of the fans and you think of the stadium here and the Champions League nights.
“So I was really interested right away. It’s a really, really great club and all I’ve seen so far and I’m really happy for choosing Celtic.”
There are many reasons why Celtic are right for Lagerbielke
As the defender points out, one of the reasons is Celtic’s brilliant history of signing Swedish players. Henrik Larsson, Johan Mjallby, Mikael Lustig, Daniel Majstorovic and Carl Starfelt all had great careers at Celtic.
The only blot in the book is Freddie Ljungberg who failed to make any sort of impression at Paradise.
The exposure to European football, especially in the Champions League, will help to raise Lagerbielke’s profile. He currently only has one international cap and at 23 years of age, he will be keen to add to that tally.

Most importantly though is that Lagerbielke is at a club where he will get an incredible opportunity to win trophies. Silverware is a rare commodity amongst professional footballers and with Celtic’s recent history, the defender’s opportunity to pick up his first domestic honour is huge.
I like the look of the Swede already. He looked more confident in front of the press today than he did at his unveiling yesterday afternoon.
Let’s hope he gets his debut sooner rather than later as the Celtic fans will be eager to see how he fits in that green and white jersey.
