Thomas Gravesen was an enigma at Celtic during his time at the club.
Gravesen was Celtic’s first-ever signing from Real Madrid and cost the Parkhead club just £2m.
Pivotal in Gordon Strachan’s 2006 Celtic team, where he won a league and Scottish Cup double, Gravesen also helped the Hoops qualify from the Champions League group stages for the first time in the club’s history.
Gravesen also earned 66 caps for Denmark and knows what it takes to perform at the highest level which is why the former Celtic midfielder moved quickly to shut down gossip he’s been hearing about Hoops hero, Kasper Schemeichel.

Celtic hero Kasper Schmeichel tipped to be Denmark’s goalkeeper for ‘a number of years’
Schmeichel earned his 113th cap for Denmark in the 5-2 defeat to Portugal this week, but Gravesen has moved quickly to dispel some gossip he’s been hearing about Celtic’s No 1 goalkeeper by telling him he’s a far better option than Chelsea’s £20m signing Filip Jorgensen.
Gravesen told the Irish Daily Mirror [print edition page 51], “Kasper Schmeichel is having a great season for Celtic and has kept a record amount of clean sheets. I keep hearing that he’s too old now but who would replace him?
“We have Mads Hermansen who is the goalkeeper of Leicester City – the worst team in the Premier League.
“And we have Filip Jorgensen, who is on the bench for Chelsea every week. Kasper will be our goalkeeper for a number of years yet.”
Schmeichel captained Denmark for the last two fixtures as the Celtic goalkeeper proves his importance to the national side.
Comparing Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel to Chelsea’s Filip Jorgensen
A legend in the game, Schmeichel has 770 career appearances and 113 caps for his country. Fellow countryman Jorgensen, at 22 is just starting out in the game but has done enough to convince Chelsea to shell out over £20m for his services.
Jorgensen has 113 career appearances and was in Villareal’s Europa League Cup winning squad in 2021 despite making no appearances for the club in the competition.
With just 18 appearances for the Chelsea first team so far, Jorgensen is struggling to make that number one spot his own.
As for Schmeichel, as well as winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Scottish League Cup, the big Dane looks on course to also win at treble at Celtic. He’s is also still producing superb performances at the highest level in the Champions League.
With 46 appearances for Brendan Rodgers and preferred between the sticks by Denmark for 55 out of the last 57 internationals, Schmeichel is still proving he’s the main man at both club and country level.
Whilst Jorgensen’s time for Denmark will come, there is no denying that, for now, Schmeichel is his country’s best option when it comes to being trusted as the number one goalkeeper.
