Tomoki Iwata is no longer a Celtic player after sealing his exit to English League One side Birmingham City on deadline day.
The Japanese midfielder made 42 appearances for the Bhoys during his stay in Glasgow, most of which were from the bench as a substitute.
He never really cemented himself as a go-to option beyond providing squad depth. With Brendan Rodgers bringing both Luke McCowan and Arne Engels to the club late in the window, it’s for the best that he moves on.
That’s not to say Iwata didn’t value his time in Scotland. He did strike up a rapport with fans and fully enjoyed his Celtic experience.
Iwata will support Celtic ‘forever’
Writing on Instagram in a goodbye message to the club and fans, Iwata said: “Everyone at Celtic, thank you very much for a lot of support until today. The experiences I had and being able to play here is a treasure for me.
“I and also my family fell in love with this town. I will follow and support you forever.
“Wish you the best for tomorrow’s game! Good luck Celtic!”
New look midfield will take Celtic forward
The addition of Engels and McCowan brings fresh ideas to the Celtic midfield that hopefully serves the club well at home and abroad.
Iwata was never the most forward-thinking central player, but also didn’t have the ability to truly make a difference defensively at a higher level.
Rodgers is pursuing a new look engine room following the departure of Matt O’Riley, valuing playmakers and talents who can support attackers in the final third.
Engels has defensive discipline in his game, too, but has ideally has that extra spark that sets him apart from a player like Iwata.
Nevertheless, we wish him well on his journey in England and hope he does well under former assistant Chris Davies.
