Tony Cascarino on what he was made aware ‘very quickly’ at Celtic, which Wilfried Nancy didn’t grasp

The warning signs and the alarm bells were ringing pretty quickly with Wilfried Nancy at Celtic.

Given that Nancy had joined Celtic from the MLS, and it was his first coaching venture into Europe, many questioned the understanding he had of the club and Glasgow.

What didn’t help matters was that, weeks into Nancy’s tenure, Martin O’Neill shared on the radio that he had only spoken with the Frenchman for around 15 minutes.

That was a huge alarm bell because Celtic and Glasgow are pretty unique when it comes to pressure and expectations, as Tony Cascarino knows too well.

Tony Cascarino on Celtic expectations as Wilfried Nancy is booted out

Cascarino only spent a short amount of time at Celtic, during the early 90s, and he stated that he ‘can’t think of a period worse than it is now.’

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former striker explained that he was made aware ‘very, very quickly’, when he joined the Hoops under Liam Brady, of what it is like wearing the shirt, and its expectations.

You have to ask, who was that individual or those individuals for Nancy? Because he didn’t make use of his time with O’Neill at all.

“I was there, and I am quite aware of what is expected from the position of fans,” said Cascarino. “It is exactly there.

“There is no good outcome when you lose to your biggest rivals. I can’t think of a period worse than it is now.

“I experienced it myself personally. But the team was still pretty decent. I didn’t play well.

“But I was made aware very, very quickly expectation of wearing the shirt. Wearing the shirt is a big one.”

Cascarino’s nightmare at Celtic…

Cascarino will know how Nancy is feeling because his period at Celtic was a nightmare, and he will go down as one of the worst signings in the club’s history.

In total, he made 30 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops, after joining from Aston Villa in 1991, scoring just four goals.
