Celtic’s win over Chelsea concluded a very impressive pre-season tour of the USA for Brendan Rodgers.

Wins over DC United, Manchester City and Chelsea saw Rodgers’ side score four goals in all three games and show a style of football that had the Celtic fans raving about the team.

What was special about the wins were the performances against the English Premier League duo.

Being up against the likes of Erling Haaland and Christopher Nkunku will help prepare the Celtic defenders for what’s coming up in the Champions League next season.

And as the team prepares to return to Scotland undefeated, Tony Cascarino has shared his thoughts on the result between two of his former teams.

The ‘most important’ thing about Celtic’s win

Cascarino joined Celtic from Aston Villa back in 1991. After just one season at the club and 12 goals scored he was allowed to join Chelsea in a swap deal that saw Tom Boyd make his move to Paradise in 1992.

Speaking about Celtic’s 4-1 win over Chelsea, Cascarino shared what the ‘most important’ thing was to take away from the game.

Cascarino said [talkSPORT], “I remember playing for Celtic against Tottenham in a pre-season friendly at Parkhead.

“And I remember the faithful at Celtic Park and their desire to win the game. Now I don’t get caught up in friendlies.

“Arteta is famously quoted in the last few days that every friendly is taken so seriously and I get it to a degree but you’re making lots of changes with players all the time you lose your consistency during the game.

“The most important thing is you don’t get injured and also you get in the minutes that enable you to start the season, really well.

“And you can work on tactics of different formations, you can work with players, set pieces. There are loads of things you can do with pre-season friendlies.

“Ultimately I don’t think the result is the most important thing and you see crazy results in pre-season often.”

Where I would tend to disagree with Cascarino is that the result clearly does matter to both sets of fans.

You only need to take a quick glance at social media to see how disappointed the Chelsea fans are and compare it to how elated the Celtic support is.

As I’ve said before, it is only pre-season and no one will be getting carried away but what I would ask is this.

Would Cascarino want to be on the side of the team that won 4-1 in pre-season or the team that lost 4-1? I know what I would prefer especially with the new season now exactly one week away from kick-off.
