Celtic vs Chelsea LIVE: 4-1 thumping as it happened, reaction, highlights

Add as preferred source on Google

Celtic have ended their USA tour in style with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Chelsea in South Bend, Indiana.

The Scottish champions had already beaten DC United by a 4-0 margin, as well as Manchester City in a 4-3 thriller, after making the trip across the Atlantic.

The Scottish Premiership season is now only a week away. Tonight’s match against Chelsea at the famous Notre Dame Stadium was the last warm-up match before that competitive action gets underway.

Goals from Matt O’Riley, Kyogo Furuhashi, Luis Palma and Mikey Johnston punished Enzo Maresca’s side before the Blues netted a late penalty consolation.

Throughout the evening and into Sunday morning we’ll have all the reaction and highlights of another classy Celtic performance, so keep refreshing for the latest! You can see how it all played out below with our live updates.

That’s it for our coverage of Celtic’s win over Chelsea.

Pre-season is now completed. Preparations will now focus on the visit of Kilmarnock to Celtic Park next Sunday afternoon.

With two trophies to defend, a League Cup to shoot for and a new expanded Champions League to look forward to, Celtic are going to be very busy over the coming weeks and months.

The USA tour was fine preparation, arguably the perfect way to build into the new campaign.

Now, if the club can deliver the outfield signings that Brendan Rodgers needs, excitement will really build.

Until next time, hail hail!

Rodgers delighted with Celtic’s USA tour

The manager enthused after beating Chelsea: “I just said to the players afterwards that all the work that they’ve done, how they’ve represented the club in their time here has been absolutely brilliant. I take great pride in that. But also on the pitch, how we’ve played, how we’ve really devoted our mindset into the work, the intensity of the games.

“I think in the performance we had what you want from a top team. We had structure, we had talent in the team and then you had work. That mentality to work and run with talent and structure gives you a great chance.”

Kasper catches the eye again

Kasper Schmeichel impressed on his debut against Manchester City and followed that up with another strong performance in the win over Chelsea.

Making nine saves in total, he was a busy man during his 73 minutes on the pitch before being replaced by Viljami Sinisalo in a planned substitution.

Fans have had their say on his performance.

Daizen Maeda had to be substituted with a knock in the first half while Nicolas Kuhn wasn’t in the match squad at all.

Rodgers explained post-match: “Nicolas was stretching in training and felt a sore back. He probably needs a few days.

“Daizen was just a clash of knees and there’s no need to risk anything at this stage of the season. Hopefully he’ll be okay when we get back.”

Enzo Maresca on Celtic’s win over Chelsea

The Chelsea boss said: “We don’t like the result as you said. Conceding four is too many. Also the amount of chances we created – first half, even when the game started we had two clear chances. Second half we started the same way.

“After the third goal, the game was finished. I think it was quite clear the difference between us and them in terms of physical condition. You can see that they are a team that in one week they are going to start their official season while for us it was just our second game the break. For me, it was quite clear the difference in physical condition.

“For sure, we need many things to improve off the ball. One of the things we did bad today was when the ball was not under pressure, to maintain the high line. When the ball is not under pressure, you need to drop.”

Star man

Fittingly at Notre Dame University, Matt O’Riley was Celtic’s star quarterback tonight, spraying passes around, combining with teammates and generally looking well up to the task of starring at an elite level.

With a goal and assist, he reminded everyone again that he is the man who makes the Bhoys tick in the final third.

He completes dribbles, intercepts the ball, wins his duels and finds others with accurate distribution at all ranges.

We need to keep him as long as we possibly can.

The verdict after Celtic punish Chelsea

It was another incisive 90 minutes from Celtic in the USA. The manager will be chuffed to see his team come through the final warm-up test so strongly.

The Bhoys are creating plenty of chances but, more importantly, taking them well. There’s composure and class in the final third. You can see the good feeling flowing through the squad.

Matt O’Riley’s finish was as smooth as it gets with the other goals a result of either intricate passing or pressing endeavour.

Chelsea had their own chances in the match but a combination of poor finishing and Kasper Schmeichel’s strength kept them at bay until the late penalty consolation.

Brendan Rodgers’ side definitely deserved this victory and they head home to Scotland full of confidence. Bring on the start of the Premiership!

Celtic re-energised

As predicted, the substitutions have brought new energy to the Celtic performance.

There are less than ten minutes left but you wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bhoys add another to the scoreline.

Excellent impact from the fringe players.

GOAL! Celtic 4-0 Chelsea

This is officially a rout.

Substitute Mikey Johnston is back on the scoresheet, breaking free of the Chelsea defensive line and latching on to a lofted Luis Palma pass.

The attacker is one-on-one with the goalkeeper and makes no mistake with a low prodded finish.

GOAL! Celtic 3-0 Chelsea

The Bhoys force an error with some strong pressing. Chelsea are in a mess at the back and Benoit Badiashile passes the ball straight to Luis Palma.

The Honduran keeps calm and finishes well.

Celtic are heading for another victory!

Celtic substitutions

Viljami Sinisalo gets more minutes in a Celtic jersey, replacing Kasper Schmeichel.

Bosun Lawal, Colby Donovan, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Odin Holm, Francis Turley and Mikey Johnston are all on too.

O’Riley, Hatate, McGregor, Scales, Kyogo and Ralston are off.

[Link]

Moment of madness

Robert Sanchez has been good in the Chelsea goal tonight but he gets it all wrong there, losing possession at least 20 yards outside his box.

Reo Hatate is sharply onto the ball but the counter-pressure isn’t taken advantage of.

The urgency has dropped out of the game here, I’m longing for the first half.

Chelsea pin Celtic in

Chelsea are coming again and again with phases of attacking possession. Although the Bhoys are defending stoutly it’s undoubtedly the Blues who look the most likely to score the next goal in this match.

Substitutions are coming, which may shake things up again.

[Link]
John McGinley

Celtic spark into life again

The Bhoys have taken time to establish themselves in the second half but slick passing opens up space for Luis Palma, then Kyogo and then Greg Taylor on the left flank.

The ball is chipped to the back post but it comes to nothing.

Better from Rodgers’ side who have taken a dip since the interval.

Classy Kasper

After an hour, Schmeichel is nine saves deep into an excellent Celtic performance. Some of them have been routine but plenty of them have shown off his quality.

He looks ready to go when the real football starts despite not having long to train with the team.

Celtic substitution

Cameron Carter-Vickers is off after 56 minutes for Stephen Welsh.

The American fell awkwardly directly after Sterling’s last effort on goal but he got back up to play on and there doesn’t appear to be any serious issue.

Schmeichel saves again

Kasper Schmeichel makes a superb stop from Raheem Sterling down low to his left. He didn’t have much time to react but was quick and strong.

There are very promising signs from the Dane in pre-season.

Raheem Sterling looking lively

Sterling has given Chelsea a much more direct threat and the attacker is testing the Celtic defence.

It’s been all blue since the restart but Celtic are doing well to keep restricting their opportunities.

No Celtic substitutions

Brendan Rodgers is ramping up his team’s exposure to football and there’s not the usual pre-season raft of substitutions at half-time.

That will likely now come on the hour mark.

[Link]
John McGinley

Second half kick-off

Like the first half, Chelsea threaten in the early stages and after pressure in the Celtic box, the ball breaks to Raheem Sterling.

The attacker fires a nice shot across Kasper Schmeichel but it hits the inside of the post and bounces into the Bhoys’ possession.

There are again thousands of Celtic supporters in attendance today and they’re enjoying what they’ve seen from the team. This tour has been quite the treat for North American fans.

[Link]

Half-time numbers

Celtic have had 48% possession to Chelsea’s 52% – it is noticeably even in terms of time on the ball and territory but the Bhoys look more incisive in attack and organised in defence.

Rodgers’ team have racked up nine shots with seven of them on target. Robert Sanchez has been forced to work hard between the sticks and has been Chelsea’s best player.

Stat trackers FotMob list Greg Taylor, Kyogo, Matt O’Riley and Callum McGregor as Celtic’s best performers and that is accurate based on how I’ve viewed the game, too.

Taylor is finding so much space in different positions of the pitch outside of the left-back area.

HALF-TIME: Celtic 2-0 Chelsea

Chelsea FC v Celtic - Pre-Season Friendly

Celtic deserve their two-goal advantage. They’ve exploited the Chelsea defensive line on several occasions and could in fact be further ahead in the match.

Matt O’Riley and Kyogo have given the Bhoys a real edge, their movement and quickness of thought punishing Enzo Maresca’s team, with the midfield and full-backs supporting them strongly.

Celtic have held up well at the other end, too, despite a couple of shaky moments early on. Kasper Schmeichel already looks to be a superb last line of defence.

It’s pleasing to watch. The usual pre-season caveats apply, of course, but it’s pleasing to watch.

[Link]
John McGinley

Chelsea having their moments

Kasper Schmeichel makes a comfortable but important stop at his near post with a strong arm and Chelsea win another corner – their 10th of the match.

Despite a decent amount of possession and territory, the Londoners can’t create the clear-cut chance needed.

Daizen Maeda goes down with a knock which no one wants to see. He’s replaced by Luis Palma.

Six goals in pre-season for Kyogo

SOCCER: JUL 23 Manchester City vs Celtic

Kyogo has been sensational this summer. He’s played in every pre-season match since returning to training and has six goals for his efforts.

It’s exciting to think he can replicate this when the Scottish Premiership season starts.

[Link]

GOAL! Celtic 2-0 Chelsea

Celtic are playing some sumptuous football and that was a lovely team goal.

After work in midfield from Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate works the ball out wide, Anthony Ralston feeds in Matt O’Riley on the right-hand side of the box who squares it for Kyogo to tap home with ease.

Excellent.

[Link]
John McGinley

CHANCE CELTIC!

That looked certain to be 2-0 after Daizen Maeda and Kyogo broke through the Chelsea line again.

Maeda plays in Kyogo close range on the right side of Sanchez’s goal but the Japanese striker can’t finish. Great save.

The goalkeeper has kept his side in this with three big stops.

[Link]
John McGinley

25th-minute water break

Given the sweltering heat, it’s no surprise to see both teams take a water break midway through the first half.

Celtic have been strong in the opening period of the match and are good value for their lead.

Brendan Rodgers will again be delighted with the intent and energy shown by his team.

[Link]
John McGinley

Chelsea respond well

The Londoners have shown good intent since going a goal behind.

They’ve had multiple attacking phases of play, won a corner and fired some difficult balls into the box but the Celtic defence are standing up nicely and Schmeichel hasn’t been tested again.

[Link]
John McGinley

GOAL! Celtic 1-0 Chelsea

There’s the goal that’s been coming and it’s Matt O’Riley! Who else?

The midfielder finds space on the edge of the box after slick passing between James Forrest and Greg Taylor.

He makes no mistake picking his spot in the far left low corner of the goal past a helpless Sanchez.

It was a superb, almost passed, finish. Pure composure.

[Link]
John McGinley

Celtic take control

After a troublesome opening five minutes, it’s the Scottish champions looking most likely to make something happen.

Hatate looks sharp on the turn connecting defence and midfield and Celtic are finding a lot of space moving into the Chelsea half.

[Link]
John McGinley

CHANCE CELTIC!

It’s Reo Hatate’s turn to drive forward with the ball at feet.

He unleashes a fierce low shot from distance that looks good value for the bottom corner but Sanchez gets down to it outstretched.

[Link]
John McGinley

Celtic push forward again

Callum McGregor is the spare player unlocked through the Bhoys midfield after a clever pass from Matt O’Riley.

He slides it to Daizen Maeda and the winger tries to square a low cross but the Chelsea defence mop up. More good play from the Bhoys.

[Link]
John McGinley

CHANCE CELTIC!

Celtic show some threat of their own. It’s Kyogo Furuhashi sprinting away from the Chelsea defence after a good ball across a high defensive line.

The Japanese striker bears down on goal and fires in a powerful shot at the near post but goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has it covered well.

[Link]
John McGinley

More Schmeichel exploits

The Danish international makes a double save from Nkunku and Chukwuemeka as Chelsea surge forward again, both of them made with his feet from close range.

The Blues had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring there and the Celtic defence looks shaky in the early stages.

[Link]
John McGinley

Schmeichel called into action

Christopher Nkunku latches onto the ball in the box to aim a header towards goal but Kasper Schmeichel saves strongly to his right-hand side.

It was a stop you’d expect him to make but he does well to clear his lines regardless.

[Link]

Immediate Chelsea pressure

The English side make the most of their kick-off and immediately threaten through Carney Chukwuemeka but Greg Taylor covers well to force it out for a corner – the chance eventually comes to nothing despite a second corner coming.

Celtic vs Chelsea predictions

It’s always quite difficult to predict how a pre-season match will go. The only thing I’m pretty sure of for this one is that there’ll be a lot of goals.

Celtic are going to press high and attack without fear – so if Chelsea can match that intent it should be an open, exciting game.

I’m going for a 3-2 victory to the Bhoys, with a similar pattern to the match as we saw against Man City on Tuesday.

Kyogo has looked sharpest this summer so it’d be fantastic to see him continue his scoring form ahead of facing Kilmarnock next weekend.

USA conditions

The temperature in South Bend, Indiana is a sweltering 28 degrees Celsius today which will give the Bhoys a tough workout in the heat at the end of their tour.

The squad were drenched by a North Carolina downpour in training on Thursday but there’s no rain expected today on a newly laid grass pitch which should play slow but consistent.

Greg Taylor’s future

Greg Taylor is in the team tonight and with no real competition at left-back is expected to be relied upon heavily again this season.

The Scotland international has racked up 173 appearances for the Bhoys, winning nine trophies, and has become a dressing-room leader.

His contract is expiring next summer and Brendan Rodgers had some interesting comments on the situation this weekend, insisting that he wants the player to sign new terms.

The verdict on Celtic line-up vs Chelsea

The return of Cameron Carter-Vickers to the team just in time for the new season is a welcome sight and that could well be the defensive line we see face Kilmarnock next week.

There’s no Nicolas Kuhn after his blistering display against Man City. Brendan Rodgers said post-match that he came off with a knee complaint, but he was spotted in training in the days after that so hopefully he is just being rested.

Tomoki Iwata is also missing from the match squad so we’ll be looking for an update from the manager on his situation too.

Overall it’s about as strong a line-up as you’d expect without any new outfield signings.

Fans will be keeping a close eye on Kasper Schmeichel as he gears up for the Scottish Premiership.

Rodgers: We want ‘pressure and intensity’ vs Chelsea

The Celtic manager said pre-match: “I think I mentioned that earlier on in pre-season that we weren’t at our level in terms of pressing, because it’s so important – that defines how good you are in attack, how well you’re pressing and working.

“So, for us, it’s more of the same. The players have been absolutely superb all over the course of pre-season but in particular over this tour we’ve had here.

“Our game is based around that pressure and intensity because when we play with that, then you can see it’s the same rhythm with the ball and we look very effective.

“We’ve been scoring goals, we’ve been really creative and working well, but there’s still a bit of work for us to do before we arrive to where we want to be against Kilmarnock.”

Celtic’s transfer state of play

Celtic are only a week away from beginning the defence of their Scottish Premiership crown but have yet to make any outfield signings.

While there’s time left before the end of the window, the situation has left plenty of fans pretty frustrated. This was supposed to be a summer of improvement and kicking on.

Having signed two goalkeepers, the consensus is that Celtic are looking at the left-back, centre-back, striker and winger positions – as well as tracking multiple midfielders in the event Matt O’Riley ends up moving on.

It’s a lot of work to do in just a few weeks. Brendan Rodgers had a meeting with Michael Nicholson and Chris McKay earlier in the week, but nothing has shifted since.

The closest potential signing is the permanent acquisition of Paulo Bernardo after a successful loan last term. Celtic are said to have agreed a fee and terms with the player, who is due to complete a medical.

The Chris Sutton verdict on Celtic’s win over City

The former Bhoys striker was left impressed with Kasper Schmeichel and Nicolas Kuhn on a good night for Celtic.

He wrote in his Daily Record column: “Nicolas Kuhn has looked a much more encouraging prospect in pre-season after failing to do it consistently last term. He would outstanding against Man City, even if he was up against a young full back who struggled with Pep Guardiola’s system.

“Two goals and a superb assist for Kyogo is not to be sniffed at though and he could play a bigger part this year. Who knows what will happen with Yang and Mikey Johnston but Celtic could do with reinforcements all over the pitch. They’ve made good moves in the goalkeeper department with Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo coming in. Both got some game time in the US and did well. Even in just 45 minutes against Manchester City, you could see Schmeichel is still top class with two superb saves to keep out Erling Haaland.”

The manager had a pre-match media conference on Friday and has talked up his team’s readiness for the season ahead.

He said: “Energy is very high. Of course, naturally, after being away from home and from their families for a long period of time it can get that, towards the end of a tour, the energy does drop but I haven’t seen that from the players.

“The organisation from the club and what they’ve put into this trip has been absolutely fantastic. Everything has been very smooth for us.

Potential Celtic team vs Chelsea

Given this is the last chance to tune up for the season proper, Brendan Rodgers is expected to name established starters to test themselves against Chelsea.

There will be plenty of substitutions throughout the night, of course, but here’s our best go at the starting eleven.

Predicted starting XI: Schmeichel, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Scales, Taylor, McGregor, O’Riley, Hatate, Kuhn, Maeda, Kyogo.

Welcome

Celtic fans have had some late nights recently staying up to watch the Bhoys in the USA, but thankfully tonight’s match kicks off at the far more reasonable time of 9pm for Scottish viewers. That’s a local stadium time of 4pm in Indiana.

If the Man City match is anything to go by then we’re in for a fun evening of open, attacking football.

Get comfy and stay in touch with plenty of news and updates to come beyond the full-time whistle.
