Transfer silly season as audacious Celtic link to Diego Costa emerges
Well, here’s a transfer rumour that’s sure to provoke plenty of speculation.
French football website Homme du Match has reported that Celtic have approached Diego Costa as a potential signing this summer.
Crystal Palace are also in the hunt to land him, it’s said.
The rumour is travelling around Celtic supporters like wildfire, provoking much discussion and a few laughs, knowing how frugal the club are.
Costa is currently a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid in December 2020, but is apparently still on the market and ready to sign for a new club.
The forward has had a long, glittering and sometimes controversial career but could have the kind of magic boots needed to really kick the Ange Postecoglou era into gear.
His track record for Atletico and Chelsea speaks for itself. He netted 58 goals and assisted 24 more in total for the London club, while banging in 83 in two spells at the La Liga giants. [Transfermarkt]
Along the way, he’s won two La Liga titles, two English Premier League titles, a Europa League, Copa del Rey and English League Cup. Not bad going, eh?
Yes, Diego Costa to Celtic sounds outlandish
Let’s be clear here, this is a pretty outlandish rumour. Even forgetting that a French outlet is reporting on a Spanish-Brazilian player, a Scottish club and an English side, there’s a lot to be sceptical about.
His wages first and foremost would surely be beyond the kind of thing Celtic have been spending on in recent years. Website Salary Sport has had his weekly wage at something beyond £150,000-a-week since 2015.
So yeah, probably best not to get too excited. However, as with every transfer rumour doing the rounds, it’s another name to keep an eye on!
Ange Postecoglou did talk about Odsonne Edouard contingency plans earlier today, but I’d be very surprised if he was referencing Diego Costa.
Good fun, the transfer window though!
