Two free former Celtic stars still looking for a club; one could do a job for Brendan Rodgers

As the transfer window draws to a close, there will be many players in the game wanting a move who will be looking anxiously towards the 1st of September.

But those who are without a club can be fairly relaxed about the transfer deadline. They can choose any time to make their next move.

And there are two former Celtic stars who are in that predicament right now. Stefan Johansen and Tom Rogic.

Johansen donned the green and white hoops a decade ago. The 32-year-old central midfielder made 114 appearances for Celtic scoring 19 goals and creating 22 assists. He won four league titles and a league cup so enjoyed a fairly decent spell at the club.

It has to be said, after a tricky start to Celtic, the Norwegian flourished after the arrival of Ronny Deila and won the PFA Player of the Year in 2015. After he left Celtic he went on to have some spells at Fulham and West Brom before landing at Queens Park Rangers.

He left the Championship side at the end of last season despite making 29 appearances for the London club.

Tom Rogic is still a free agent after being released by West Brom last season. Celtic fans are all too aware of the Australian’s quality, as is Brendan Rodgers. Rogic was a key figure during the Celtic manager’s first spell at the club and was part of the Invincibles Treble squad.

Rogic amassed a huge medal collection during his ten-year career at the club.

At West Brom, Rogic showed flashes of the quality that we often witnessed at Celtic but despite that, his career at the club never managed to take off and he was eventually released.

All the talk this week has been about how Brendan Rodgers could add quality to this Celtic side before the transfer window closes.

The Celtic manager has found himself under pressure this week after his team’s inept performance against Kilmarnock and because of the recent injury crisis surrounding the club.

But to add quality you need cash, right? Not where Rogic is concerned. The type of patient football Celtic are currently playing would suit the 30-year-old creative midfielder.

Rogic wouldn’t have lasted long in an Ange Postecoglou team but with Rodgers, he could potentially flourish again.

I know a lot of fans think that taking back players who have left is a sign of regression, and normally I would agree. But with Rogic, and as a free, what would we lose if it didn’t work? A small financial loss of a few month’s wages?

However, what we could gain if it did far outweigh that risk.
