Celtic has a number of international-class players in their squad right now.

With the international break coming up Celtic first-team players like Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Paulo Bernardo, and Arne Engels were all waiting for that international call this week.

Whilst Carter-Vickers and others have learned if they will be travelling with their country’s after Sunday’s Glasgow Derby, there are other Celtic stars who will not.

Jota will stay in Glasgow, as will the likes of Celtic’s Maik Nawrocki and Nicolas Kuhn.

However, there is one Celtic star who didn’t make the international cut, but Simon Donnelly reckons a call from his national boss is not too far away.

Celtic’s Luke McCowan told he is ‘unfortunate’ to have missed out on Scotland call

Donnelly was discussing the fact that young Lennon Miller was called up to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad when he said that Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan can consider himself unlucky not to make the cut.

Donnelly told Superscoreboard [42m], “I think he’s unfortunate where you look at the list of the midfielders there, we’re pretty strong in there.

“What I would say for Luke McCowan is, because I covered most of the Celtic games, if he keeps performing the way he is, there’ll be an opportunity around the corner for him at some point.”

Luke McCowan positional change would guarantee Celtic star Scotland cap

With Scotland’s midfield so strong, a positional change was mooted for McCowan in which Donnelly reckns would guarantee the Celtic midfielder a Scotland call.

Donnelly continued, “You make a good point though, if he was a striker he’d probably be in and about the squad.

“Because it’s the position [Scotland are weak] and every time he comes on for Celtic he creates, he likes to play off that front, and he is an attack-minded midfielder.”

Can’t say that many will see McCowan as a striker, but with six goals and six assists to his name, the 27-year-old has shown to be an effective and dangerous player in front of goal for Celtic.

Until McCowan can establish himself as a regular starter for Celtic, it seems like that call from Clarke could be some way off yet.
