It seems a lifetime ago now that Wilfried Nancy was in charge of Celtic.

That unknown figure, who swapped the regularly mocked MLS stage for the pressure cooker of Glasgow, nearly derailed Celtic’s season, only for it to be saved by Martin O’Neill.

Broadcasting stateside for the 2026 World Cup, talkSPORT had former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel amongst their panellists, where Nancy’s time at Celtic became a topic of discussion.

Friedel, who had a brief managerial stint with the New England Revolution, compared his experience to Nancy’s nightmare spell at Celtic, pinpointing ‘stubbornness’ as the main reason behind the failure at Parkhead.

Wilfried Nancy’s failure to adapt to Celtic after MLS switch

Enduring a dismal reign of just eight matches, Nancy faced severe backlash for his reluctance to consult O’Neill before he left after his first stint in December.

Celtic’s legendary manager told talkSPORT at the time that the pair spoke for barely ten minutes in total.

Given the turmoil engulfing Celtic all season, the former Columbus Crew boss made a fatal error in ignoring O’Neill’s advice, while his refusal to adapt his tactical approach to suit a declining squad ultimately sealed his fate.

Compounding the issue, Friedel noted that Nancy appeared unable to adapt his methods beyond the MLS, resulting in a project that came crashing down with alarming speed.

Jim White: “Whatever happened to Wilfried Nancy. Do we know? He came back here (to the United States) with his tail between his legs, having been a major flop during his short time in charge of Celtic.”

Friedel: “I came over here, and I was the head coach with the New England Revolution. I found it difficult to go from the professionalism of the Premier League to this way (the MLS).

“I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I was too stubborn to stay in my own professionalism. I wouldn’t adapt to the level of MLS.

“I think what Wilfried did is that he adapted to the US culture. He went over there. When you go to a club like Celtic, and you hear his first interview. ‘I don’t care about the results. It’s how we play.’

“No. Results matter, and the fans will actually put up with you playing poorly if you are winning the matches for a certain amount of time.

“So, I think he found that change, going to that type of club, very, very difficult.”

What’s next for Nancy?

To Nancy’s credit, from the interviews he has done since his time at Celtic, he hasn’t reacted in a bitter manner, but taken it on his chin and accepted what happened.

But you would sense that such a spell would have a lasting effect, such as not being able to get another managerial gig in a top league in Europe, given that this was his first time outside of the MLS bubble.

However, by all accounts, that might not be the case, because clubs in Ligue 1 are pushing for Nancy’s signature, as the Frenchman could resurrect his managerial career back in his homeland.
