It’s not just Celtic who were involved in utter chaos this season, but so was Mikey Johnston at West Bromwich Albion.
The irony is that Johnston and his West Brom team suffered the same MLS mistake as Celtic.
Wilfried Nancy’s nightmare spell at Parkhead was well-documented, but a certain Eric Ramsey suffered the same fate at the Hawthorns.
West Brom snapped up Ramsey from Minnesota United in January. He lasted nine games, failing to win any of them, with Johnston playing throughout that ill-fated period, failing to score or assist.
It resulted in the former Celtic winger staring at a possible relegation, before their former player, James Morrison, saved the day and kept them in England’s second tier with one game to spare.

Were Celtic right to let go of Mikey Johnston?
Mikey Johnston’s mixed fortunes at West Brom since leaving Celtic
When Johnston left Celtic for West Brom, he initially went on a loan deal in January 2024, and he wowed the crowd straight away.
The Republic of Ireland star scored seven goals in 19 Championship matches, and to nobody’s surprise, he was snapped up permanently.
While Johnston continued to have good moments in a West Brom shirt, he just couldn’t find that consistency or regular match-winning moments that his new fans craved.
The following season, he would only find the back of the net three times, as Albion struggled to mount a promotion push after losing the play-offs the previous campaign.
This season was slightly better from the all-action winger, even if the goals tally didn’t show it, but it could and should have ended a lot worse, given the mess West Brom put themselves in.
This is how Johnston’s games at Celtic, and now Albion, compare:
- Celtic games: 93
- Starts: 35
- Goals: 13
- Assists: 12
- West Brom games: 98
- Starts: 72
- Goals: 12
- Assists: 16
