"Unless you went to a different AGM"; Celtic boss' class response to journalist's DoF question
Ange Postecoglou rejected a journalist’s narrative today on Celtic potentially hunting for a Director of Football.
At the Celtic AGM, acting Chief Executive Michael Nicholson was asked about the prospect of bringing in a Director of Football. He stated that he’ll discuss with the manager about structures needing made to the footballing department where that was concerned.
In the past, Postecoglou has poured cold water over the idea that a DoF is on the priority list [Scottish Sun]. Instead appearing to highlight other areas he wants to strengthen in the background.
And when queried what style he would want from his Director of Football, Postecoglou said via Celtic TV: “I think unless you went to a different AGM I don’t think that’s what Michael said. I don’t think he said that we’re looking for a Director of Football.
“What he did say is that we’re looking to restructure the football department and we’re looking at all areas. Yes, I’m very involved with that because ultimately the structure has to sort of fit in with what we’re trying to build here. For us the key to that for Michael and I is to get the right people in.
“But yes I don’t think he mentioned Director of Football and I certainly haven’t mentioned Director of Football. It’s not something that’s in our minds. in our minds is to get the right people in certain areas that we think need bolstering in this organisation.”
The Celtic/Director of Football chat needs to be put to bed
Back in the summer, talk of a Director of Football was all the rage. You could understand it too. It stemmed from reports that we were taking a look at potential candidates for the role in a bid to kickstart a major restructuring of the football club [Daily Mail].
You could see the sense in it too. Getting a senior figure into the club to ensure we aren’t rocked by managerial departures the way we were when Brendan Rodgers left the club back in 2019.
But it’s clear that isn’t something that’s being considered anymore. At least not by Postecoglou in any case. We’re now 10 months on from the Director of Football speculation. It seems as if we’re beating a dead horse by continuing to go on about it.
Nicholson did confirm the club’s plans moving forward with regards to the scouting department. It was explained at the AGM that the club is in the hunt for a new Head of Data as Postecoglou firms up his backroom team.
So we’ll see how things progress over the coming weeks, but there’s no point pretending that we’re still in the hunt for a sporting director. We’ve still to get a permanent chief executive in the door for goodness sake. It wasn’t made clear yesterday whether Nicholson is being considered for the role in a more permanent basis.
But Ange made his thoughts clear on a DoF today. It’s a no-go.
