Vasilis Barkas is a name that Celtic fans find synonymous with the COVID season. The failed bid for ten in a row was down to many factors, but most people would agree that Barkas was one of them.
And to be fair to him, that wasn’t completely his fault. He joined Celtic at a time when an unprecedented global event was underway and it clearly hindered his ability to settle at the club.
Now, at FC Utrecht, Barkas has found a new lease of life. His form has impressed his loan club and it seems that he is keen to make the move permanent.
In an interview with Greek media, Barkas said he felt it was tough settling into Celtic and the move to the Netherlands has been good for him.
Barkas said [Gazzetta], “It was hard for me. I was at Celtic in a period with COVID, I went back to the Netherlands and found a different mentality. It also has several Greeks here. I also have Tassos (Douvikas). The team trusted me and helped me get back on track.
“I definitely like the Netherlands. My family is happy here. My wife and child. I have a month left and then we’ll see what happens.”
In my opinion, it makes sense to let the Greek international leave the club. Even if he returned and turned in some good performances, Barkas would never be able to convince the Celtic support that he is a viable option between the sticks.
The basic mistakes he made still burn sorely in the Celtic supporters’ minds but, like I said, it wasn’t entirely all his own fault.
Now we have a steady goalkeeper in Joe Hart and an able backup in Benji Siegriest, I wouldn’t imagine Barkas would be happy playing as a third-choice keeper. And Celtic would be less than happy covering what is bound to be a hefty salary.
I hope Barkas gets his wish and a permanent move away from Celtic. If anything this season has proven, it is that he is a decent keeper, just not for us.
