Alistair Johnston was one of Celtic’s best players last season.
In fact, the Celtic defender was also one of Canada’s top performers as Johnston led the national side to the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America semi-finals.
Johnston has been capped 54 times by Canada and the Celtic defender has barely made a mistake since becoming an integral part of Jesse Marsch’s side.
However, in last night’s Gold Cup match between Canada and Curacao, Johnston made an out-of-character mistake that cost the national side all three points against Dick Advocaat’s side.

Celtic’s Alistair Johnston costs Canada a crucial Gold Cup win vs Curacao
We told how Canada fans were delighted that Johnston had joined the national squad ahead of their upcoming double-header against Honduras and Curacao.
1-0 up and cruising towards three points in their quest for the Gold Cup and 2026 World Cup qualification, Johnston made a mistake in the heart of the Canada midfield.
The Celtic defender attempted to make an easy header, when this happened:
After the ball dropped off Johnston’s shoulder, Curacao’s Antonisse pounced and rescued a vital point leaving Canada supporters and their assistant manager Mauro Biello gutted.

Whilst the draw is not critical to Canada’s World Cup qualification hopes, after hammering Honduras 6-0 on Wednesday, dropping points to Advocaat’s minnows is less than ideal.
And Canada assistant Mauro Biello was less than impressed.
Biello told Sportsnet, “I think it’s about managing the game. You’ve got to size up the situation. We’ve got to do that better.
“And we were under a little bit of pressure. And for us, we got a little bit stretched in moments. This is a (Canadian) team that’s front-footed, that they want to go after. But there’s moments that we have to understand that we have to be more compact and be difficult to break down.
“We’ve got to learn from these types of games. That’s an experienced team over there (in Curaçao). And for us, it’s about taking the lessons from this game.”
