As the dust settles on Celtic’s Champions League draw with Atalanta, every player that Brendan Rodgers fielded in Bergamo deserves all the praise coming their way.

For too long Celtic have been getting criticised by many in the media for their poor Champions League results but in the Gewiss Stadium last night, Brendan Rodgers changed that narrative.

Up against the top goalscorers in the Serie A, Celtic were always going to be up against it at Atalanta and the firepower available to the Serie A side.

However, Celtic defended heroically and earned a valuable point in Bergamo as Brendan Rodgers silenced his critics with the 0-0 stalemate against Atalanta.

To get a result in Italy, the Celtic defence would have to be much improved from what the fans saw in the defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Not only did Auston Trusty impress the Celtic fans, Kasper Schmeichel also put in a commanding performance that was summed up with this superb compilation put together by TNT Sports.

67 Hail Hail noted Schmeichel’s performance as one of the standouts last night as we described his 90-minute display, “Kept Celtic in the game before the break with at least two significant stops. Football ratings site Fotmob named Schmeichel as as their star man and the best player on the pitch rating the Celtic goalkeeper’s Atalanta performance 8.4.

The Denmark international made six saves in total, three of those diving, made 12 ball recoveries and one punching clearance.

Schmeichel’s distribution was a bit suspect however as he made 42 passes with just 71% of those reaching a Celtic teammate.

His long-ball accuracy was poor with a 45% success rate from 22 attempts. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that if Schmeichel wasn’t on top form last night, Celtic would most likely have suffered another Champions League defeat and for that, the Danish stalwart deserves every bit of credit heading his way.
