The amount of headlines surrounding Celtic defender Liam Scales’ red card for the Republic of Ireland against England last night.

Already today Roy Keane has said Scales’ stupidity‘ cost Ireland the game against England and we’ve also heard Ireland boss, Heimir Hallgrimsson, lament ‘the need’ to send off the Celtic defender for a second yellow card.

Gary Lineker also reacted to Scales’ red card with a joke about the ‘scales being tipped in England’s favour’ after the ordering off gave his country an easy route to a win.

Scales has been in great form for both club and country with pretty much no discipline issues so when he was sent off, it certainly raised eyebrows amongst the Celtic support.

However, it seems that the Celtic defender has left a lasting impression on the Irish media after he flattened Harry Kane with a tackle that summed up Scales’ first half performance for the Republic of Ireland.

Liam Scales’ ‘massive tackle’ as Celtic defender flattens England captain Harry Kane

Harry Kane is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in world football. So when Scales did this to the England captain:

It got the Irish media talking about a first half performance that was labelled as ‘impressive’ by the Celtic stopper.

Balls.ie: “Red carded just after half-time in the incident that changed the face of the game. Scales’ completely mistimed challenge when Bellingham was played through saw him dismissed for a second yellow card, after a first half in which he had been impressive in marshalling the England defence. It was undeniably a clumsy tackle, though, and he could have no complaints given that his first yellow card was needless.”

Irish Independent: “A massive tackle on Kane summed up an impressive first-half. However, had a nightmare moment when the Celtic defender clipped Bellingham, gave away a penalty and picked up a second yellow.”

The Irish Sun: “Sent off for two yellows; the first for kicking the ball away and the second for conceding the penalty. A shame, as he did everything else in his 51 minutes of action so well.”

Liam Scales’ full Celtic discipline record after red card Republic of Ireland dismissal vs England

Scales has made 75 appearances for Celtic since his breathrough into the first team last season. Those appearances amount to 6067 minutes of football.

Incredibly, in that time, the big Irish defender has never seen a red before last night’s 5-0 defeat to England.

With eight bookings in total in his Celtic career, Scales’ discipline has been almost impeccible since becoming a regular under Brendan Rodgers.

Scales was booked just five times last season and is on three yellows right now so the Celtic support have nothing to worry about as the 26-year-old proves that his discipline is not an issue that should concern anyone.
