Frustrated Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has taken to Twitter today to publicly call for talks with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and National Clinical Director Jason Leitch.
The Pittodrie club revealed to fans yesterday their overall matchday revenue had fallen a massive 82% despite the sale of PPV matches.
Cormack has followed that up today with comments on the social media site, appearing to put pressure on the Scottish Government and their stance on allowing crowds back into matches.
He said: “This sobering chart is not about Aberdeen. Could be any Club. Going to the Euros reminds us, certainly those of us old enough to remember, that Scottish Football has the unique ability to galvanise a whole nation, perhaps more so today than at any other time.
“What about fairness in restrictions. The highly regulated Tests we’ve pulled off should be no surprise to Jason Leitch who told Clubs outdoor fresh air events in stadiums were more palatable than indoor events. Witness the unregulated, hopefully isolated, mess Thursday night!
“Some clubs have reluctantly cut back on community programs & academies to stay competitive at first-team level. It’s called survival! What Scottish Football needs is urgent dialogue, encouragement & a plan to get fans back safely. Will Nicola Sturgeon and Jason Leitch meet us?”
As Cormack notes, this situation is not unique to Aberdeen and we know that Celtic have also been pushing for test events at Celtic Park, with a view to bringing crowds back safely.
Celtic’s total revenue was down £13.2m on the year prior in recently released financial results (The Daily Record). It’s an urgent situation for clubs, of all sizes, up and down the country.
We know that public health has to come first, but Cormack clearly feels that the Scottish Government could be doing more to help the football industry navigate the current crisis.
It’ll be interesting to see what comes of this latest social media lobbying.
It’s not the first time Cormack has taken to the platform to air his grievances, and not much has changed.
