Ally McCoist has delivered his rather predictable verdict on Celtic beating Rangers with some comments about VAR this morning.
The former Rangers striker was trying to sound magnanimous as McCoist ran the rule over Celtic beating Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup in extra time at Hampden.
The game was packed with incident as the VAR and refereeing decisions grabbed all the headlines despite Celtic clearly deserving to beat Rangers.
However, as refereeing decisions cast clouds over Celtic’s win, former Rangers striker Ally McCoist had his own cloud cast over him as he delivered his predictable verdict over the Hampden clash.

Ally McCoist admits Celtic ‘were the better team’ before Rangers VAR tears
When asked by Jeff Stelling if he was keeping his head low as a Rangers fan this morning, McCoist moaned about VAR as he delivered his verdict on Thelo Aasgaard’s red card, Auston Trusty’s challenge on Jack Butland and Anthony Ralston’s Celtic handball for the Rangers penalty.
McCoist told talkSPORT, “The first thing I would say the last game at Ibrox the 0-0 draw, oh man, it was terrible, just absolutely terrible.
“At least this was a much, much better game with goals, plenty of incident which I’ll have a moan about later on in the show, I don’t have any doubt about that.
“No, it was a much better spectacle. I thought Celtic were the better team in the first half, Rangers were really poor first half, and then the sending off kind of changed the game.”
McCoist strangely agrees with Celtic handball after weird Rangers red card comments
As every football fan knows, the handball rule is the most confusing one there is, but there is a general consensus that if the arm is tucked into the body then it should not be given.
And as for dangerous play, that’s pretty clear cut. Intention doesn’t come into it so why McCoist needs to add a qualifier to that is beyond us.
McCoist continued, “Rangers were miles better after the sending off, which was a sending off. I don’t think the lad meant it, but I thought it was a poor tackle, and probably was right decision.
“And then, remarkably, the referee did not send off the Celtic centre-half for deliberately kicking the Rangers goalkeeper on the head.
“It was one of the worst decisions I’ve seen a long time. Then VAR don’t send him off either. And then the game to and fro’d, and Rangers get that penalty late on. There was a bit of debate about that, which I thought it was a penalty. There’s a surprise.
“But a great game and really good game, really enjoyable, the result didn’t go our way, so that was a disappointment.
“I was just pleased it was a far better game.”
To claim Auston Trusty ‘deliberately’ kicked Butland’s head is a bit of a stretch from McCoist when you see the reaction of the Celtic defender almost immediately after the challenge.
And it’s also strange how the rule book is forgotten about when emotion is tied into trying to make an analysis of the game when a fan of either club.
As for Celtic, they will care not a jot about McCoist’s comments as they now know that another date at Hampden awaits and a possible first step to yet another treble.
