Former Celtic midfielder, Tomoki Iwata, is drawing all the plaudits after he made his debut for Birmingham City last night.

The Blues beat Wrexham 3-1 after initially going behind to a third-minute Jack Mariott opener but Birmingham equalised in the 22nd minute through Jay Stansfield to take the game into half-time level.

Stansfield put them ahead in the 52nd minute but it was Tomoki Iwata who stole the show with his 59th-minute piledriver that delighted Birmingham City shareholder and NFL legend Tom Brady.

Iwata left Celtic on transfer deadline day after being convinced to join Birmingham City after having a chat with their Technical Director, Craig Gardner.

Birmingham City fans buzzing with ex-Celtic midfielder

Iwata was unlucky not to get more game time at Celtic during his 18-month spell at the club. Breaking into the team ahead of Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate was always going to be a tough job for any player.

But after making his goalscoring debut last night, these Birmingham fans were over the moon with their new summer signing.

One City fan simply said, “Iwata is class.” and another echoed that with, “Oh yeah he [Stansfield] was really good but I was just in awe of Iwata all game. He was so controlled.”

Another Birmingham fan said, “My favourite signing this summer. Bargain.” whilst one put, “Iwata looks like he could be a real tidy player looked to struggle with the pace for the first 15 minutes but as soon as he got comfortable he looks good. Great to have such quality and competition in the midfield.”

Another compared the former Celtic midfielder albeit jokingly to a World Cup winner:

Even the Wrexham supporters got in on the act:

And a popular Wrexham fan podcast with over 42k followers also paid tribute to the former Celtic man:

Iwata deserves success at Birmingham

Despite his lack of minutes at Celtic, the supporters knew and appreciated that they had a very good player on their hands.

Unfortunately for Iwata, it just wasn’t meant to be for him at Celtic Park and now at Birmingham, it looks like he could be a major coup for the League One club.

Clearly they have ambitions to climb the leagues to get into the Premier League and with a player like Iwata in their squad, their chances increase significantly because just like the Birmingham fans are finding out, the Celtic supporters always knew Iwata was a classy midfielder.
