What Callum Osmand said about Engels and McGregor in Celtic training shouldn’t be a surprise

Callum Osmand has one of the best mentors to learn from at Celtic in Callum McGregor.

The 20-year-old is taking part in his second pre-season at Celtic, with the players currently in Portugal ahead of their clash against Sporting in Lisbon on Tuesday evening.

Osmand took part in a light-hearted Q/A alongside teammate Colby Donovan for CelticPlayer, and the forward was asked, ‘Who has been the best trainer?’

It shouldn’t be a surprise that McGregor’s name was mentioned, with Osmand stating that it’s ‘standard’ from the Celtic skipper, as Arne Engels’ name was also put forward.

There is a reason Engels is so highly sought after, as Osmand explained, he is the last player you want to come up against in training.

😬 Are you concerned by Callum McGregor’s decision to switch to Brendan Rodgers’ agency?

Arne Engels and Callum McGregor stand out in Celtic training

Colby Donovan: “Cal, who do you think has been the best trainer?”

Callum Osmand: “There have been a few. Arne Engels always gives it a little. He is having a sunbathe now, but he always gives 100%. You don’t want to be on the end of his tackles or something.”

Donovan: “Calmac?”

Osmand: “Calmac is up there as well. Always.”

Donovan: “He has to be.”

Osmand: “It’s the standard.”

Engels and McGregor leaving this summer would be a big blow

There is a lot of talk around McGregor’s future at Celtic. Martin O’Neill has stated he will sit down with his skipper to discuss his future.

Yes, the Celtic Park faithful wouldn’t blame McGregor if he left for Saudi Arabia, but if a man of his influence leaves the club this summer, then it’s going to be very, very difficult to replace him.

As for Engels, once again, when he got injured before the post-split fixtures last season, his stock grew because many started to realise how important he is in the middle of the park.

But if big money is put on the table for Engels, given that there is Premier League interest, then it has to be accepted.

While he won’t be a big a miss as McGregor, it’s still a hole the powers that be will have to plug, and it isn’t going to be easy!
