What is CelticPlayer? New streaming platform explained as Celtic TV binned

Celtic have announced the launch of a new club streaming platform in place of Celtic TV.

CelticPlayer will be the club’s new home of digital streaming, both live and in demand.

It replaces Celtic TV, which was first launched in 2004 and digitally formed in 2011. After the club is finished ‘integrating’ its new platform, Celtic TV will be no more.

The club had outlined its intentions to change its official streaming service after feedback in the 2024 Fan Survey.

CelticPlayer will integrate streaming with other club platforms

Aside from just a rebrand, CelticPlayer aims to give fans “easier log-in access” across the club’s website, online store and ticketing platform.

It will also soon be integrated into the new Celtic FC App.

In the platform’s announcement, the club confirmed that all existing Celtic TV subscribers will have their subscriptions automatically transferred to CelticPlayer.

So there’s no need to do anything if you already subscribe to Celtic TV. Subscribers should have received an email from the club.

The club also promise a “vastly improved site layout and sleek user experience”.

Celtic TV had previously been a separate website to the club’s official page, as well as a separate login. This unnecessarily gave fans an additional log-in to remember.

The launch of CelticPlayer should, in theory, make things more simple.

In terms of content, things will be exactly the same. Exclusive interviews and training footage, but mainly for access to live matches.

In pre-season, the club typically show the team’s friendlies live to all subscribers. During the season, however, competitive matches are only available to subscribers outside of the UK & Ireland.

Celtic TV was widely criticised, and the proof will be in the pudding whether the rebrand will actually improve the service, instead of merely repackaging it.

Still, Gerry McCulloch has promised a shiny new studio at Celtic Park…
