Celtic supremo, Dermot Desmond is a well-known golf fanatic.

The Irish billionaire loves a round of golf as well as looking after the interests of Celtic since he became the club’s majority shareholder.

Celtic has become a financial powerhouse under the watchful eye of Desmond as well as becoming the most successful club in Scotland.

It was also Desmond’s relationship with Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers that persuaded the Irishman to return to Celtic after Ange Postecoglou left to join Spurs in 2023.

But it seems that the Celtic powerbroker’s influence on the course once led Desmond to make a Parkhead promise to 2010 US PGA Tour Champion, Martin Kaymer.

Dermot Desmond’s Celtic promise to US PGA Champion Martin Kaymer

Kaymer’s Celtic supporting caddy, Craig Connelly was speaking about the golfer when he revealed that Desmond wanted to invite the German to Paradise after hearing about him knowing ‘a few Celtic songs’.

Connelly told the Let Me Be Frank podcast [53m 10s], “Unfortunately, no [about managing to get Kaymer to a Celtic game]. It’s still on my to-do list.

“I had visions and this is purely just me being selfish about me, I remember when he won the US PGA in 2010, I think Dermot might have actually said to him, Dermot Desmond had said to him, because Dermot is always around the golf, he’s like, ‘Any time you want to come to Celtic Park, he’s like, Craig is always telling me…’

“He knows a few Celtic songs, Martin, as well. Then he won the US Open, and I’m thinking, we’ll get him up to a Champions League game, but it was 2014, never in the Champions League.

“Would you want to waste a major going about with the UEFA Cup? Nah, we’ll keep that for the time being.

“So fingers crossed he’ll win another major, and we’ll take him to Celtic Park. If not, then obviously I’d love to take him to Celtic Park on a European night or a Rangers game.”

Martin Kaymer is not the only golf champion who knows Celtic songs

Indeed, Kaymer is not the only professional championship golfer who has a love of Celtic. 67 Hail Hail once discussed how former Open golf champion, Henrik Stenson admitted he follows the club due to legendary Hoops striker Henrik Larsson.

Stenson admitted his Celtic love when he said, “But Henrik Larsson, one of our best-ever players, ended up at Celtic, so that got me interested in them.

“However, I might have just said I support them to p— off a Rangers fan.”

Celtic’s famous fanbase appears to be growing at the same rate as the club’s ever-swelling trophy cabinet as the Hoops’ popularity continues to spread around the globe.
