Davie Provan has ripped into Steven Gerrard for his ridiculous comments on Nathan Patterson after Celtic outlined their own concerns.
Patterson was one of five Rangers players who broke Covid guidelines by going to a party back in February. All five were given a six-game ban by the SFA, but Rangers inexplicably decided to appeal it.
Gerrard outrageously tried to claim that Patterson shouldn’t be banned for so long because he’s a promising young talent [BBC].
Understandably, Celtic interim boss John Kennedy was left irked by the remarks, and claims Patterson should be hammered for his wrongdoing [Scottish Sun]. And Provan has been next to have a pop as he questioned the validity of Gerrard’s words. He also questioned the length of time it’s taking for the appeal to be heard.
Speaking in his Scottish Sun column, Provan said: “If a hamstring strain kept Nathan Patterson out for four weeks, would it affect his career? Hardly. So what is Steven Gerrard on about claiming the youngster’s four-game ban for a Covid breach would damage his career?
“Is Gerrard saying bans should only apply to lower-league scufflers? He’s lucky he wasn’t managing Rangers when Duncan Ferguson spent 44 days in the clink for headbutting Raith Rovers’ Jock McStay. The SFA threw in a 12-game ban for good measure. Patterson got off lightly.
“Are the SFA still working under gaslight? Rangers lodged an appeal against bans for their Covid 5 on April 2. Hampden won’t rule until April 20.
Conveniently for Gers it means Nathan Patterson, Bongani Zungu and Calvin Bassey could all play in next weekend’s Old Firm Scottish Cup tie. Steven Gerrard has had plenty to say on Hampden’s disciplinary system. Would love to get his take on this.”
Steven Gerrard is embarrassing himself with every sentence; Celtic right to question several aspects
The sheer guff coming out of Ibrox over the Covid Five scenario absolutely side-splitting. Gerrard’s sheers desperation to have a right-back fit and available for the Scottish Cup tie next week couldn’t be any clearer.
Patterson is a decent talent. That can’t be denied. But Gerrard manages to make out as though Rangers have the next Cafu on their hands. And even more laughably is how he believes a six-game ban would affect his career.
It’s not as if he’s been handed a season-long ban. Patterson would be out for the rest of the season undoubtedly, but he would be back for pre-season and be available for selection ahead of next season. Why on earth would such a short ban have such a major influence on his career? We’re only talking six games.
It’s as Provan has said – an injury that kept Patterson out for six games wouldn’t destroy him. Why then would a ban have that effect? Someone really needs to put these questions to Gerrard. He gets away with saying far too much unchallenged nonsense that simple logic can easily tear apart.
Thankfully, Provan has been able to see through it all. He can see that Gerrard is clearly at it ahead of the derby. More worryingly, of course, is why the appeal is taking so long to be heard.
It’s almost as if the SFA don’t want to anger the Rangers manager. Of course, surely that’s not the case…eh?
