What Italian media said about Lazio after shock defeat ahead of Champions League clash against Celtic

Not the result or performance Celtic fans wanted yesterday, especially ahead of a crucial Champions League showdown against Lazio.

Let’s be honest, it was deserved given how the team shot themselves in the foot, especially with the first-half penalty miss from Luis Palma – Chris Sutton raised two questions after the match.

But whilst it’s not an ideal build-up for the trip to Italy, it’s not just Celtic having a weekend to forget because Lazio had it worse.

Maurizio Sarri’s side were beaten 2-1 at Salernitana, who are sitting bottom of the Serie A table and hadn’t won a game this season.

Ciro Immobile had opened the scoring via the penalty spot – his 100th away goal in Serie A, a record because no other player has reached such a feat in that league.

But as Football Italia reported, Lazio ‘struggled to create chances’ against Salernitana’s new coach Pippo Inzaghi – Perhaps it’s a good sign for Celtic.

That also means that Lazio are winless in three, so in that sense, they aren’t exactly going into the Celtic game with their tails up.

This will be a case of both teams going at it from the off next week because they will want to respond to previous disappointment, so hopefully that suits the Bhoys down to the bone.

Celtic’s very last chance

Let’s be honest, the team isn’t going to progress here to the knockout stages. But there is still that slim chance of staying in Europe beyond Christmas.

For far too long, the team has been knocked out of Europe before the New Year has come around, not even entering the Europa League.

And it’s looking like the same old story again because only three points will do here.

If David Turnbull starts, you will expect him to take a spot-kick if one comes around because that has been a major issue for the team this season.
