Diego Simeone is a marmite-like figure and Celtic fans got to see that during both fixtures against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League this season.

From the 2-2 draw at Celtic Park to the 6-0 drubbing on Tuesday night. Just like his playing days, Diego Simeone and his team can sure get under your skin.

Following the conclusion of Celtic’s heavy loss at the Wanda Metropolitano, you would assume the home manager would be ecstatic and in a respected mood after the full-time whistle.

But it wasn’t meant to be as Diego Simeone ran straight down the tunnel, completely blanking Brendan Rodgers – Ally McCoist slammed the Atletico Madrid manager for his actions.

But the Argentine has previous because he did the exact same with Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool when they beat the La Liga giants 3-2 in 2021.

At the time, Jurgen Klopp addressed the issue and stated that it was ‘not right’, but he understood because both teams were ‘emotional’ during a rollercoaster and drama-filled game, as he told TNT Sports.

Jurgen Klopp on Diego Simeone

“They just wanted to wind me up and they don’t like that,” said Klopp. “But the situation is clear. I want to shake his hand. He didn’t want it.

“His reaction, for sure, wasn’t right. Mine wasn’t too cool as well. But we are both emotional, so when I see him next time, we will shake hands, definitely. And it’s nothing happened. He was obviously angry, not with me, but with the game and the world, stuff like this.”

Imagine Simeone at Celtic…

It would never happen given the league he is managing in and the finances, but Simeone would be a treat to watch and have at Parkhead.

Love him or loathe him. Every single one of his players performs for that shirt, they are in your faces, aggressive, us against the world type of mentality and it has worked.

The style of play is evident to all, whether you like it or not. But for Simeone to win two La Liga titles during a time when Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were at their best is simply remarkable.

Not forgetting Atletico’s various trips to the Champions League final.

It was a hard defeat to take for the Bhoys, yes the team were down to ten men, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Spanish side went deep into the competition or reached the final again because their attack is simply out of this world.
