What Kieran Tierney told Chris Sutton about returning to Celtic one day

Kieran Tierney refused to rule out a return to Celtic when speaking last year.

As we shared last night, Tierney would consider a return to Celtic on loan this summer, according to a report.

While the prospect of having our old number 63 back will be a pretty tantalising one for the Hoops fanbase, any deal seems a long way off at present.

However, we can at least speculate about what the Arsenal man may be thinking.

We also know what he said in an interview on the BT Sport Currie Club Podcast last October.

Hoops favourite Chris Sutton joined Tierney and host Darrell Currie on the show, and picked his moment right at the end to quiz the full-back on a return to Celtic one day.

“You’re at Arsenal now,” Sutton said. “But further through your career, would it be an option [to return]?”

Tierney responded: “I think when a player who loves the club leaves, there’s always that ‘what if he comes back?’

“You can’t rule anything out. I’m always going to love Celtic. I’m always going to support Celtic.

“You never know in football, you genuinely don’t. There was a stage where I thought I would never leave Celtic so you never know what can happen.

“You just need to take it game by game.”

It was an understandably non-committal response from the defender who was probably remembering who paid his wages.

Many will see a sense of inevitability about Tierney returning to Celtic Park one day. But most would have expected it to be much later in his career.

Of course, that may still be the case. But it is interesting that he has even been linked with a return right now.

There seems to be a plethora of reasons for a deal not to happen, with wages at the top of the list, even in a loan arrangement.

However, if the last month has taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected when it comes to Celtic.

Don’t rule anything out.

In other news, it seems very likely that Marco Tilio will become Celtic’s second summer signing
