What Tony Docherty has said about Luke McCowan’s situation as Celtic set to come calling

Luke McCowan is the latest name on the lips of the Celtic support after news broke that the Bhoys are expected to present an offer for the Dundee captain.

Alongside their pursuit of Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels, McCowan is on the radar and is viewed as a player who would add strength in depth for forthcoming domestic and European endeavours.

Furthermore, he would also have the added carrot of being homegrown. Celtic have struggled to expand this detail in recent years amid their need to fulfil squad regulations on the continent.

Dundee want about £1 million for McCowan. Hibernian saw their third offer of £750,000 turfed out earlier this week, while Bolton Wanderers have also expressed interest. The former Ayr United man has a year left on his deal at Dens Park.

Nevertheless, Tony Docherty has given his latest take on the situation as he opens up about where the future of his skipper could lie this summer.

Tony Docherty on Luke McCowan’s future and contract status

In light of talk over his future, Dundee boss Docherty has revealed talks over a contract extension are still on the table for McCowan, but he has yet to sign on the dotted line amid interest from elsewhere.

He stated [Daily Record]: “It’s still ongoing. The conversations we have with Luke, we have daily, but again, there’s nothing to report on just now.”

“Every case is individual, and everyone’s unique. And this one’s just the same. It’s just very much, Luke’s our player until we hear anything different.

“Luke has to look after himself as well, but he’s a very important player for Dundee Football Club. While he’s still here, he’s still a captain, he’ll still remain a very important player.”

Later, Docherty did concede Dundee have alternatives lined up in case he departs, stating: “There’s things bubbling away at the moment. There may be something before the weekend, but we’ll see.”

Celtic fans wait for more arrivals after landing Adam Idah

Adam Idah was finally confirmed as a Celtic player last night after months of back and forth, setting the scene for a lively end to the window in Glasgow’s east end.

Fleshing out numbers in several areas seems to be the order of the day, with midfield, left-back, central defence and the flanks likely to be critical points of focus.

I’d expect the market to open up now a little. Managers across the country are scrambling around trying to put the finishing touches to their squads, which means they may also need to offload to pave the way for additions.

There is business there to be done for Celtic. Following a frustrating couple of months with limited transfer movement, hope exists that Rodgers can land a few quality bodies.
