Charlie Mulgrew has told talkSPORT that former Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk once made him feel like an infant in training.

Mulgrew and Van Dijk shared a dressing room at Lennoxtown and Celtic Park for two years before the Dutchman signed for Southampton in 2015.

The ex-Scotland international was speaking live on talkSPORT on Friday morning and was asked who the best player he ever played alongside was.

Of course, he replied with Van Dijk, who went on to win two Premier League titles and a Champions League crown as captain of Liverpool.

Mulgrew then shared a funny story that sums up how good Van Dijk was at Celtic.

Van Dijk once made Mulgrew feel like a child at Celtic

Mulgrew said that Van Dijk was the best at a number of key skills and attributes including dribbling, which is rather unusual for a central defender.

One day at training, he then explained Van Dijk made him feel like a five-year-old when he started laughing at Mulgrew’s dribbling skills.

Mulgrew admits it was the most demoralising moment of his career. He said: “Best player I ever played with? I played centre-half with Van Dijk.

“I compared Van Dijk like, you know in FIFA where you make your own player and you make him all 20s? That’s what Van Dijk was.

“He was the most skilful. He was the quickest. He was the best in the air. He was the strongest.

“I remember I had the ball in training one day and I tried to kind of dribble past him and he started laughing at me.

“It was the most demoralising thing that’s ever happened to my career. I felt about 5 years old.”
