Why Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren could now be coached by Graham Potter, after his sacking from West Ham

Before Brendan Rodgers could return to Celtic in 2023, Graham Potter was linked with the Parkhead gig.

It didn’t materialise, as Rodgers returned to Celtic, and since then, Potter hasn’t had the best of times in the dugout, including his recent gigs in London.

During that period, Potter was sacked by Chelsea, and most recently, West Ham United booted him out the door.

But could Potter now land himself an international gig, and subsequently be coaching Celtic’s summer signing Benjamin Nygren?

Graham Potter to coach Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren for Sweden?

Nygren wasn’t used as Sweden suffered back-to-back World Cup qualifier defeats this past week, as their hopes of reaching next summer’s World Cup now look pretty bleak.

As a result, Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked by Sweden, and Potter is open to coaching a nation where he made a name for himself at Ostersunds FK from 2011-18.

Tomasson’s treatment of Nygren was poor, so hopefully, if Potter does get the job, Sweden fans get to see Celtic’s versatile forward on the pitch rather than watching from the bench.

Who has Potter managed during his managerial career?

If Potter gets the Sweden gig, it will be the first time in his coaching career that he has managed an international side.

At the age of 50, two years younger than Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, Potter has a fair amount of experience under his belt, as there are some similarities to the jobs they have taken.

Swansea City is the main connection between the two, as well as Chelsea, but Rodgers was merely a youth coach at the London club when he was starting his managerial career at Stamford Bridge.
