Why Kwon Hyeok-kyu’s long-term career ambition is good news for Celtic

Celtic have added three permanent names to the first-team squad this summer and there seems to be the promise of more to come.

Odin Thiago Holm, Marco Tilio and Tomoki Iwata have already permanently joined the club with the additions of Yang Hyun-jun and Kwon Hyeok-kyu all but confirmed by Celtic.

But it was Hyeok-kyu’s admission about where he sees his long-term career ambition that caught my eye.

As 67 Hail Hail told yesterday, the Korean midfielder was very bullish about his proposed move to Celtic when he said, “I will be determined to get a starting spot. I will work hard to make the Busan club and my juniors proud.

“I will become the best player in Celtic and go to higher places such as the German Bundesliga and the English Premier League.”

In the past that would probably have gained an angry reaction from the Celtic fans. How dare a player who is yet to even don the green and white hoops already have his next proposed move planned out! Plus to have the confidence to oust established players like Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley really is something.

But I like this from the Korean midfielder. It shows that he is extremely confident in his own ability. And if his ability matches anywhere near his confidence levels then the Celtic fans could be about to witness a very good player next season.

What I also like about this is his honesty. There is no badge kissing, no faux promises about being a Celtic player for life. Just a refreshing and candid admission that he plans to be the best player he possibly can be and play at the highest level possible.

And if that does happen then it means that he, and Celtic, are being successful, winning trophies and making a mark in Europe. Because in all honesty, to get a move to Germany or England, you have to that to have any hope of attracting clubs from both those leagues.
