Wilfried Nancy’s post-Celtic plans addressed after Saint-Etienne rumours

Celtic are (not-so) gradually moving on from Wilfried Nancy.

It was almost two months ago when the Frenchman was announced to be taking the place of Martin O’Neill, who had won seven of his eight games in interim charge.

Fast forward another eight games, and Nancy was sacked by Celtic. Many a Hoops fan would now refer to him as the worst manager in the club’s history.

Celtic hadn’t lost four consecutive games since the 1970s… Nancy lost all of his first four games. These included a top-of-the-table clash with Hearts and a League Cup final against St Mirren.

In the end, he was dismissed after just two wins in eight. We all may be focused on Celtic, but where does Nancy go from here?

What do you think is the main reason Wilfried Nancy couldn’t buy a win as Celtic manager? 🤔

The stats are damning…

Wilfried Nancy’s plans after Celtic sacking

Some rumours have suggested that Nancy is close to joining Saint-Etienne in Ligue 2, though these appear to be baseless at the moment.

The move isn’t impossible, given that the club had pursued Nancy before he joined Celtic.

Speaking on Unfiltered Soccer Podcast, MLS insider Tom Bogert shared that Europe remains Nancy’s priority, despite the ‘security’ on offer in MLS.

He said: “There’s nothing that I heard that indicated that (Nancy will go back to Columbus), even on the Columbus side.

“And I think too for Nancy he’s he’s a proud guy and he’s determined. It went terribly, right? It literally could not have gone worse at Celtic.

“I would be surprised if his next job is in MLS.

“Maybe that’s naive because he could have his pick at any job. He’d become one of the highest paid managers in the league.

“He would he would have a lot of control because of what he’s earned, what he did in Columbus and Montreal. But he’s always wanted to go to Europe. He’s always wanted this next step.

“So, for him to go to Celtic and it go just disastrously after a month and then be like, ‘Alright, I’m back to MLS,’ I’d be a little bit surprised just from what I know about him.

“But again, that’s probably naive. Because the most money, the most control, the most security would be in MLS rather than going to a midtable leg club.”

Wilfried Nancy’s ill-fated Celtic spell

Nancy’s start to life at Celtic was daunting on paper – and in the end, the worst-case scenario was exactly what played out.

After O’Neill’s run of wins in his interim spell, Nancy lost 2-1 to Hearts, 3-0 to Roma and 3-1 to St Mirren in his first week.

This was bruising enough, and after a 1-0 defeat to Dundee United, fans were already calling for him to be sacked.

Wins over Aberdeen and Livingston weathered the storm and showed better signs on the pitch – but in a crucial week of games against Motherwell and Rangers, two more defeats sealed Nancy’s fate.
