Will Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy get a winner’s medal after Celtic’s title win?

‘Champions again, Ole, Ole,’ it was music to Celtic fans’ ears when that was ringing around the stadium after the full-time whistle against Hearts.

After the chaos of Brendan Rodgers at the start of the season, and the nightmare 33-day spell of Wilfried Nancy, it’s baffling that Celtic have still managed to steer themselves towards the title.

But as the winner’s medals are being dished out to those in green and white, with Martin O’Neill proudly and deservedly wearing his around his neck during the post-match title celebrations.

What is fascinating is that both Rodgers and Nancy are actually eligible for a winner’s medal, but the responsibility to provide them falls entirely on Celtic, not the SPFL.

How Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy are eligible for a winner’s medal after Celtic defeat Hearts

Rodgers left Celtic in October, not because of results, but his relationship with the board and Dermot Desmond had gone beyond repair.

Not saying the majority of Celtic supporters would be happy to see him get a medal, but more wouldn’t mind it, because his situation is entirely different to Nancy’s.

Some would argue that if Nancy didn’t take charge of Celtic, then the team probably would have gone on to win the Treble.

But it states in the SPFL rule book, Champion Clubs, section 33, C40, the following: ‘The Company shall present to the Champion Club of the League 25 League Championship Medals for Players, other staff and Officials.’

That means that it’s up to Celtic to decide who does or doesn’t get a medal.

Added to that, the Hoops could also purchase additional medals, if they wished, and provide it to the likes of Rodgers and Nancy, which, of course, isn’t going to happen.

‘Additional League Championship Medals may be purchased from the Company with the prior consent of the Board. Only those Players who participated in League Matches for the Champion Club in the relevant Season will be eligible to receive such medals.’

It’s going to be interesting to see which Celtic players miss out on a winner’s medal, because there are quite a lot who fall into this category.

Celtic’s transfer business has been so abject, and so many players have been frozen out or not even lasted five minutes, that you could make an XI of them from Junior Adamu to Jahmai-Simpson Pusey.
