Celtic stood up like champions against Rangers in the League Cup final at Hampden on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers has been used to his team producing high-quality performance after high-quality performance this season.

Whether that’s in the Premiership – that’s why there is a nine-point lead at the top – or in the Champions League.

But Celtic’s penalty shootout win over Rangers was made far more difficult than it should have been, from minute one up until the end of extra-time.

The Bhoys not only fell behind, but they then allowed Rangers to come back into the game on two occasions in the second half as it blew up into a chaotic Glasgow derby.

But in the end, Callum McGregor was lifting the trophy aloft to prove one thing and one thing only.

Willie Miller says Celtic are ‘the best team in the land’ after win over Rangers

Celtic aren’t going to play any worse and Rangers aren’t going to play any better, yet, at the end of it all, normal service was resuming again.

Willie Miller made it clear that Celtic are ‘the best team in the country’ and they also have the ‘finest players’ and ‘strongest squad’ to choose from.

The legendary Aberdeen player also explained how the champions have been ‘controlling’ Scottish football for over a decade now, as he told The Scottish Football Podcast.

“I still think they are the best team in the land right now,” said Miller. “Rangers put on a really strong fight, but Celtic are the best team in the country. They have the finest players. Even got the strongest squad.

“They just keep finding a way to lift trophies. The club is up there. They are doing well, in the Champions League too. Financially they are rock solid. They have the money to go and invest, to improve, and if Rangers do manage to create a challenge, then you can be sure Celtic can go into their big treasure chest and gold coins. Get some out to bring in quality players to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“They have controlled Scottish football for the most part of a decade and a half. They are up there and still are the best team in Scotland. And proved it once more.”

Willie Miller hails ‘quite incredible’ Callum McGregor’s cup final record for Celtic

McGregor had a mixed game against Rangers, but he didn’t stop getting on the ball and also played a key role in Daizen Maeda scoring the third goal of the match.

The 31-year-old is racking up the trophies and is climbing the list of Celtic’s most decorated players – now on number 23.

But what’s even better is that he has never lost a final and Miller stated further on BBC Radio Scotland that is ‘quite sensational’.

“Callum McGregor, quite incredible, never lost a cup final,” said Miller. “How is that for a record? It isn’t too bad. It’s quite sensational.”
