With Scotland missing Gilmour, Celtic star David Turnbull could make the difference

Scotland fans are clamouring for Celtic star David Turnbull.

Turnbull, Celtic’s Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year for 20-21 [Celtic FC], enjoyed a fantastic season with the Bhoys. Overcoming a knee problem that scuppered a 2019 move [BBC], Turnbull was a constant source of trouble for opposition defenders.

His inventive passing, occasional screamers and stamina marked him out as Celtic’s best player in a difficult season. And now Scotland fans want to see him to do it against Croatia.

With Billy Gilmour having to miss out due to Covid-19, Steve Clarke’s midfield will look different for the crunch Euro 2020 tie. Of course, Turnbull isn’t a direct positional replacement for the Chelsea man. Gilmour, more of a deep-lying playmaker, ostensibly a no.6, will more likely be replaced by Callum McGregor or Scott McTominay. But next to John McGinn, there’s surely a space for Turnbull.

With Christie unable to make his mark against the Czech Republic, and Armstrong not able to convince either, Turnbull is more than worth a gamble. Scotland need goals tonight, and the set-piece delivery and passing vision of the ex-Motherwell man is surely an asset.

Key passes, i.e. passes that lead to opportunities (without necessarily being assists), are a debatable metric of creative output. However, Turnbull outranked the likes of Lionel Messi in that statistic last season, and that cannot be a bad thing.

Whatever the case, Scotland desperately need a win to progress through to the latter stages of Euro 2020. While we’ve never gotten past the group stage in a major finals before, Scotland fans are cautiously optimistic ahead of tonight’s battle with Croatia.

Picking an attacking talent like David Turnbull would surely turn dial that caution down.
