Aiden McGeady had some strong praise for Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou this week, speaking as a guest on BBC Sportsound’s coverage of the draw against Shakhtar.
The former Celtic winger, currently at Hibernian but on the sidelines injured, was giving his opinion on Postecoglou’s comments on the Bhoys’ chances in the Champions League and the response to the 3-0 defeat against Real Madrid.
He was left very impressed by what the Australian had to say, despite the generally positive perception of the display vs the Spaniards.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland [14/09, 17:20], McGeady said: “Postecoglou handled it really well. He toned down the positivity really well. Yeah, it was the European champions, but let’s not accept that.
“It’s very, very encouraging to hear the manager talking like that. It’s an optimistic attitude to have. He sounds like the kind of guy I would love to play for. The positivity around the club right now is immense. The job that Postecoglou has done. The name that he’s made for himself since he’s arrived. I just think he’s used that as well.
“He might not even believe what he’s saying here, this is the thing about great managers. He’s sending out that message to everyone – we can compete with Real Madrid. Don’t be accepting going off the park losing 3-0 and getting clapped off. I’ve had managers like this in the past. It’s terrific man management and it’s terrific media management as well.”
McGeady’s words will resonate with plenty of Celtic supporters of course. This is pretty much how many fans feel about the way Postecoglou goes about his business.
His media handling has actually been a large part of his popularity with the support, punctuating what we’ve seen on the pitch very nicely indeed.
More than that, McGeady seems to think it may have also helped inspire some of the Celtic players to do better at the club. Long may it continue.
