Youngster Adam Montgomery on brink of Celtic opportunity after weekend friendly

Adam Montgomery is closing in on a Celtic first-team opportunity under John Kennedy after taking part in a bounce match at Lennoxtown this weekend, website VideoCelts reports.

Celtic played a friendly against a youthful and reserve Kilmarnock side at the training centre yesterday morning.

Joe McHugh reports that Montgomery featured at left-back in a defence that also included Jonjoe Kenny, Nir Bitton and Stephen Welsh.

Kennedy played two different elevens in each half.

Montgomery is listed as a forward on the official Celtic website but it’s said he has been shining at left-back of late. The senior side need cover in that position following an injury to Greg Taylor.

It all comes after the 18-year-old put pen-to-paper on a new long-term contract at the club.

Celtic announced late last month that he has been tied down until 2025.

The youngster has since featured on the bench in matches against Aberdeen and Dundee United. He had never been included in a match squad when Neil Lennon was in charge of first-team affairs.

Clearly the interim boss is a fan of his ability. Montgomery could well be the next Celtic youngster to make his debut. Training and playing at Lennoxtown with the first-team is certainly a solid indication of that.

Next week’s match against Rangers could be too soon for him given the pressure surrounding that fixture.

However, with Scottish Cup games and meaningless league fixtures on the horizon, expect to see the teenager before the end of the season.

In other news, Jamie Redknapp has been taking up the Celtic-linked Chris Wilder on Sky Sports today.
