Athletic Club’s Celtic title message says everything about this special bond

Few clubs across European football consistently show Celtic the kind of respect Athletic Club do. Their latest congratulatory message after another league title win only reinforced a relationship that has existed for years.

“Champions again” was the message from Bilbao following Celtic’s latest triumph, but Celtic fans know this relationship is far deeper than social media.

Athletic have repeatedly acknowledged Celtic’s successes, history and identity over a long period of time.

Athletic Club have shown Celtic respect for years

This is the same club that honoured Celtic legend Billy McNeill with their prestigious One Club Man recognition. It is the same club that paid tribute at Celtic Park and openly embraced the connection between both sets of supporters.

Athletic also travelled to Glasgow for James Forrest’s testimonial and publicly praised him as a modern example of loyalty in football. Those gestures are not manufactured. They reflect values Athletic clearly see inside Celtic.

That mutual respect has become increasingly obvious in recent years. Athletic supporters regularly display Celtic colours and references around matches, particularly whenever Rangers are involved.

Celtic and Athletic Club still feel different from most clubs

Modern football is full of clubs chasing branding opportunities and social media engagement. Celtic and Athletic still feel rooted in identity, community and tradition instead.

Neil Lennon once spoke about the shared philosophy and history between both clubs before a friendly in Bilbao back in 2011. That connection still feels genuine today because it comes from supporter culture rather than marketing departments.

That is why Athletic’s latest message resonated so strongly with Celtic fans. It was not forced and it was not random. It was another reminder that one of European football’s most authentic relationships is still going strong.
