Callum McGregor is making an impression again for Celtic
Callum McGregor has once again gone unnoticed for Celtic in the early part of the season.
Amid all the discussion around Mikey Johnston and Lewis Morgan’s rise, Ryan Christie’s return and of course Kieran Tierney – McGregor has found his usual spot under most people’s radar.
But the truth of it is that he’s probably the club’s most valuable player at present.
Celtic are not entertaining any bids for McGregor
While Celtic quite publicly slapped a £25milion price tag on Kieran Tierney’s head amid Arsenal’s interest, the same couldn’t be said of McGregor.
Of course, the interest in the midfielder hasn’t been quite as sincere. Yet when Leicester came sniffing around in June, Celtic reportedly told them that they’d be wasting their time making a move. He simply wasn’t for sale.
If Neil Lennon was to lose the 26-year-old then chances are that he would find him hardest to replace of all his Celtic players. He practically said as much to the Scottish Sun last week.
“He’s pivotal to what we want to do going forward”, Lennon said of McGregor. “He’s just brilliant. I don’t take his performances for granted.
“The more he churns them out the more people take him for granted. But I don’t.”
Lennon has rarely said a truer word. It’s probably a blessing in disguise that the majority undervalue McGregor’s game and what he brings to the pitch every time he plays.
The midfielder played more minutes than any other professional footballer last season. While that achievement has been scoffed at by many fans, and rightly so, it does show that he is practically undroppable – for both club and country.
It will be a sad day when McGregor moves on. Hopefully he continues to go under the radar for a while yet.
