Carl Starfelt has said very little, but what he has said matters. His latest comments leave one outcome clearly on the table.
Starfelt left Celtic in 2023 and is entering the final phase of his current deal, with one year left on his contract. As yet, there is no stress in his position and no firm commitment to extend.
The big Swede has confirmed that only informal talks have taken place regarding a renewal. That alone sets the tone for what comes next.
Starfelt has also made it clear that this summer will be decisive, stating he will assess if anything interesting comes up. That is not a player closing doors, and should Celtic look to reunite him with Cameron Carter-Vickers if the opportunity arises?
Should Celtic reunite this central defensive partnership?
Carl Starfelt has one-year left on his contract, should Celtic ask the question?
Celtic exit never closed the chapter for Carl Starfelt
Starfelt handled his departure from Celtic professionally and always speaks about his time in Paradise with fondness.
But it seems his contract situation is still to be resolved as the former Celtic defender told La Voz de Galicia, “I have one year left on my contract after this season. There is no stress. But I think there have been some informal talks between the club and my agent (about a possible renewal).
“We’ll see how it all ends. This summer I will see if anything interesting comes up.”
There has been no dramatic shift in tone or urgency from the defender. His comments are measured and consistent with a player keeping control of his next step.
But it seems Starfelt left his position open and flexible. And one thing Celtic should do is test the water about a possible return.
Carl Starfelt’s Celtic return could become a possibility
With no advanced negotiations confirmed, his situation remains open heading into the summer. That keeps every potential move in play.
His willingness to consider new opportunities means no option has been ruled out. That includes a return to Celtic, where Starfelt already understands the demands.
Celtic know exactly what Starfelt brings at this level. His experience, consistency, and familiarity with the environment remove any uncertainty about adaptation.
Starfelt won two SPFL titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups at Celtic, which included a treble so the big defender knows what it takes to succeed at Parkhead.
And his partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers was excellent.
Starfelt has not made any bold declarations about what comes next. But he has made one thing clear, nothing has been decided yet.
