Celtic boss Neil Lennon’s plea for fans at games likely to go unheard

Celtic boss Neil Lennon certainly wants fans to attend games in Scotland. He made that clear in comments to BBC Sport.

The Hoops boss wants to see Scotland taking heed from sports in other countries and up the number of fans that can go to games.

However, it has to be said that Scottish government are unlikely to let his happen anytime soon.

I watched an NFL game last night at Kansas City Chiefs. There was 17,000 or 18,000 in their stadium. In Ligue 1 in France, I watched Brest playing Marseille and there was 5,000 or 6,000 in the stadium” Lennon said, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“Why can’t we accelerate”

“So I don’t understand to a certain degree why we can’t accelerate this when all the protocols and measures have been checked and checked again by the club” he concluded.

The reason why the government won’t let fans attend football for now is due to fears about the pandemic spreading.

When it comes to football especially, the government has been very cautious. Look at the games involving Aberdeen and Celtic that were cancelled at the start of the season, for example.

By those standards It is actually a bit surprising that the test events with 300 fans are going ahead. Ross County vs Celtic and Aberdeen vs Kilmarnock will be attended by fans this Saturday.

Last test events for a while

They will be the last test events for a while though. The government announced this week that there will be no more test events until the 5th of October.

It should also not be forgotten that back in August Nicola Sturgeon, as reported by the Daily Record, gave football a ‘yellow card’ after the incidents involving Boli Bolingoli and Aberdeen players.

It would be no surprise if that is also playing into the government’s thinking. Even though there have not been any incidents of that magnitude since.

The chances of Scottish football having the numbers at sporting events that Lennon saw in America and France would therefore be slim.

It is good to see him sticking up for the fans. There is nothing more that every Celtic fan would want at the moment that to be back at a stadium. It just doesn’t look likely to happen any time soon.

In other news, fears that Celtic’s game against St Mirren will be postponed are likely to be unfounded.
