Celtic cannot repeat Adam Idah mistake with Arne Engels despite rejecting £25m bid from Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest have refused to give up on signing Arne Engels this deadline day.

An offer of £25m was submitted by Forest for Engels, who has received interest from clubs in Germany throughout the window.

Martin O’Neill said it would take £100m for the Hoops to consider selling the Belgian international this late on.

Engels is still Celtic’s record signing of £11m and if he were to leave 18 months after joining, it would only make that 2024 transfer window look even worse.

You have £10m to spend on deadline day. Name one signing you would make for Celtic

Celtic would be sabotaging their season if they sold Arne Engels now

Yes, the midfielder hasn’t hit the heights of what you would expect from a record signing, but selling him now would be a grave mistake.

Selling Adam Idah for £7m to Swansea City late on in the summer window left them scrambling around for a replacement, eventually settling on Kelechi Iheanacho.

Even then, they still had to find a striker in January due to the lack of options. Selling the 22-year-old now would give them no time to bring in a viable replacement, weakening the squad.

Surely the board wouldn’t even do that? Surely…

Celtic’s disastrous 2024 transfer window recapped

You might recall the 2024 transfer window as being one of the very few where the Celtic board decided to spend a few quid.

As well as Engels, they also forked out £9m for Idah to join permanently.

In terms of the other additions that year, only Kasper Schmeichel and Auston Trusty are regular starters.

If Engels were to go as well, that would be a damning verdict on the business done that summer.
