Celtic don’t need a big name, they need the manager Gordon Strachan just described

Celtic are searching for a new manager at a moment of uncertainty, but Gordon Strachan has already outlined what the club actually needs.

Martin O’Neill will step back from his role as the interim manager at the end of the season and a host of names such as Jens Berthel Askou and Robbie Keane are in contention for the job.

Strachan’s message is clear and vital, though, the next appointment must be defined by character rather than reputation.

Strachan’s blueprint matters more than any CV

When Strachan was selected to replace O’Neill in 2005, the choice of appointment wasn’t one that got Celtic fans off their seats.

The Scotsman ended up winning three league titles, two League Cups and one Scottish Cup, as well as qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

He left as someone universally loved and has always said it was about his resilience and honesty with the fans as opposed to suger-coating anything.

In his interview with The Celtic Way, he said: “You need to speak to the people, get to know their character.

“You can have all the data in the world, what you want to get back to is resilience, character.”

Celtic’s reality makes mentality non-negotiable

It doesn’t matter who is appointed by Celtic as they will have to win trophies, regardless of their past.

A summer rebuild of epic proportions is due to take place and building a squad mixed with talent but desire and fight is a tough combination to crack.

Recruitment will be aided by having plenty of money to spend after recording profits that Premier League clubs would be jealous of, but the Bhoys can’t just spend it on anyone, they need the profile to fit.

Celtic do not need the biggest name available. They need the manager who fits the profile Strachan has already described, because history shows that profile is what delivers success at the club.
