Celtic have an unusually difficult problem on their hands, with Marcelo Saracchi and Kieran Tierney both performing well enough to start every week.
Both players made an impact in the win against Dundee and both provided crosses that ultimately led to goals.
Tierney is the natural first-choice and has been a standout player for Celtic this season but Saracchi has never put a foot wrong when selected and that is leaving Martin O’Neill with a huge headache.
The selection dilemma on Celtic’s left flank
Saracchi gives Celtic a different dimension, driving forward aggressively and constantly looking to stretch play. He likes to get into advanced areas and create chances from wide positions. The 27-year-old suits games where Celtic dominate the ball and need to break down deep defences with width and speed. That profile makes him extremely effective in domestic matches where the opposition sits back.

Tierney remains the more complete full-back, particularly when Celtic are under pressure or facing stronger opposition. His defensive numbers underline his reliability in one-on-one situations and his ability to read danger early. The Scotland international also brings leadership and composure, organising the back line and maintaining structure when the game becomes stretched. In tighter matches, that control often outweighs Saracchi’s attacking threat.
Why rotation is the only real solution
There is no perfect answer here, and trying to force both players into the same starting XI risks weakening the overall balance of the team. If Celtic were to change formation, they would have to go with Tierney as a left-sided centre-back and Saracchi as a wing back.
Alternatively, the Uruguayan could be pushed further forward as a left winger, which would see Daizen Maeda take the striker role.
Who is the most underrated player in the Celtic side?
Instead, Celtic should lean into a clear rotation strategy based on opposition and game state. Saracchi should start matches where the Hoops expect to dominate, allowing him to push high and create chances from wide areas.
Tierney should start the bulk of the matches but, with his fitness sometimes still an issue, Saracchi is a reliable asset to have.
